ABSTRACT

The world today is facing the biggest challenge of survival. Degradation of

ecosystem, depletion of natural resources, increasing levels of pollution pose
major threat to the survival of mankind. The need of the hour, therefore, is to
concentrate on the area of environmental aspects, which shall provide an
insight into various environment related issues. Environmental studies are an
interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, chemical and
biological sciences, with the study of the environment. It provides an
integrated, quantitative, and interdisciplinary approach to the study of
environmental system & gives an insight into solutions of environmental
problems.

INTRODUCTION

With international pollution levels on the peak, countries have been forced to
repair emission standards for automobiles. Nearly all cars and motorcycles
registered in India must undergo emission trials to comply with the
government’s emission standards. Therefore, it is imperative that you get your
vehicle’s PUC Certificate. PUC full form is Pollution Under Control.

What is PUC certificate?

PUC stands for ‘Pollution Under Control’. The PUC certificate is a document
that authenticates that a vehicle’s emission levels are within specified
emission standards. In order to get this certificate, a vehicle is put through the
PUC trial. These tests are normally carried out at petrol pumps in the country.

It is compulsory to take your vehicle for emission testing once every six
months. A new vehicle gets a PUC certificate with a validity of one year.

The PUC certificate contains essential data about your vehicle and the test,
including PUC certificate serial number, vehicle registration number, date of
test, emission readings, and validity of the PUC test. Drivers can download
this vehicle pollution certificate online as well after getting their vehicles
inspected at an certified centre. A valid PUC certificate can be downloaded
from the official Parivahan Sewa website. You just require to enter a few
essential details such as your vehicle’s registration number and chassis
number to get the PUC details online.

Why is a PUC certificate needed?

Apart from capitulating with traffic rules, there are a few significant reasons
why an emission certificate is needed:

Mandatory as per law

In harmony with the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1989, a vehicle must have a
Pollution Certificate, which must be renewed when it expires. By falling to
comply with this, you may be subject to fines from the traffic police as well as
the Regional Transport Authorities (RTOs). PUCs are government-issued
approvals that your vehicle’s emission levels are within specified limits.

To deny pollution
Motor vehicle emissions that surpass permissible levels can be damaging to
the environment and to people’s health. Hence, every resident must adhere to
the government’s pollution levels for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-
wheelers. Obtaining a PUC certificate or operating an emission test ensures
that vehicles do not surpass permitted pollution levels.

PUC certificates:

What are the prices and validity

You should be familiar of the validity and cost of the PUC of your vehicle.

 A PUC certificate is valid for one year for a new car or bike. You will
require to renew it on a regular basis.
 The new certificate has a validity of six months for both cars and
bikes. If the PUC test causes an unfavorable result, the validity of the
certificate will be determined by that result.
 If a car ejects more CO2 than the permissible limit, the testing centre
will inform the RTO, the Deputy RTO, and the Assistant RTO within one
business day.
 PUC tests are particularly inexpensive. Relying on the fuel type and the
vehicle being tested, the fee ranges from Rs. 60 to Rs. 100.

PUC test procedure

 With diesel vehicles, the engine is completely accelerated, and the

pollution levels are watched. Five readings are accomplished, and the
average is taken as the result.
 Unlike with diesel vehicles, petrol vehicles may idle without using the
accelerator. This reading describes the final result.

Test criteria and certificate

PUC tests should be performed on all vehicles within the following limits.
Testing for PUC can be accomplished at any licensed petroleum pump or
independent testing facility. Certificates are also given at the testing location.
