Slide 1: Frege’s Biography and Theories

A. Biography
His full name is Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege (8 November 1848 – 26 July 1925).
He was a German philosopher, logician, and mathematician. He worked as a mathematics
professor at the University of Jena. He is understood by many to be the father of analytic
philosophy, concentrating on the philosophy of language, logic, and mathematics.

His contribution in language is proceeded in philosophical papers "On Sense and

Reference" and "The Thought" are also widely cited. The former argues for two different
types of meaning and descriptivism.

B. Theories
1. Frege’s Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics
In Frege’s term logic, all of the terms and well-formed formulas are denoting
expressions. These include: (a) simple names of objects, like ‘22’ and ‘ππ’, (b)
complex terms which denote objects, like ‘2222’ and ‘3+13+1’, and (c) sentences
(which are also complex terms).
2. Frege’s Philosophy of Language
The terms of a language have both a sense and a reference that at least two semantic
relations are required to explain the significance or meaning of the terms of a
language. A sense is a meaning of the language used, the reference is a kind of
obeject that refered to which determined the truth of meaning.
