Detailed Lesson Plan

Teacher: JICK R. DE GUZMAN Subject: SCIENCE

Objectives
 Differentiate the following element and compound.
 Describe a elements and a compounds.
 Appreciate the importance of elements and compound in every day
living.
Content Standard Demonstrates understanding of classifying substances as elements or
compounds.

Performance Standard Makes a chart, poster, or multimedia presentation of common elements

showing their names, symbols and uses

Learning Competency Recognizes that substances are classified into elements and compounds

CONTENT/TOPIC Elements and Compounds

LEARNING Science 7 For lifelong Learning Technology Used:

Values Integration Little amount or big amount of pure gold both shine. This can be compared to
doing a small good thing for somebody and getting the same appreciation as
doing a big good thing.

EXPLAIN Elements
There are substances that exist naturally in their
simplest or elemental form. They are classified
as elements. Example sodium metal and chlorine
gas mentioned earlier. Other examples are the
solids like gold, iron carbon, aluminum, and
sulphur, the liquid bromine and the gases like
oxygen, hydrogen, ozone and helium. These
elements consist of only one type of atom.
An elements is the simplest that cannot be
broken down further into simpler kind of matter
either by physical or chemical means. It can exist
either as atom gold, iron and carbon or as
molecule oxygen gas or nitrogen. Scientist
agreed to give symbols fro each helpful
especially to those elements with long names a
letter or two letter symbols may be used. You
can find these symbols in the periodic table. It is
written inside the same box for that element. For
instance O is the symbols for oxygen.

List common elements, their symbols and origin

Elements that are the same column have similar
properties. We call this group in a column as a
family and has a family name. However at this
point you will refer to each family with their
corresponding group number. Notice that
columns are numbered 1 to 18 from left to right.
Compounds
The other kind of substances is a compound. We

mentioned earlier that the sodium chloride, salt,

is a compound. It is made of the elements
sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) unlike elements
compounds can be broken down into simpler
substances. If there only about 118 elements that
have been studied, compounds are enormous in
number and more are produced. Compounds are
represented by formulas formulas are
abbreviations for the names of the compounds.
Examples of some compounds are aluminum,
water, salt and alcohol.
A. Aluminum , KAl ( SO 4)2 12 (H2O)a
component of astringent, contains the elements
potassium (K) aluminum (Al) sulfur (S) oxygen
(O) and Hydrogen ( H).
B. Water is composed of hydrogen (H) oxygen
(O)
C. Salt contains sodium ( Na) and chlorine (Cl)
elements
D. Alcohol compound (C 2 H 5 OH)is made up
elements carbon (C), hydroge ( H) and oxygen O
What about sugar? What is it made of?
Let
us

analyze the decomposition of sugar ( C 12 H 12 O11

) notice that sugar is composed of three kinds of
elements. Carbon, hydrogen, and Oxygen recall
what happens when an iron grill that is not
painted, is exposed to air the elements iron and
oxygen from the air combine to form a new
substances the compound iron oxide or rust. Iron
is a solid with metallic luster while oxygen is a
colorless gas. When they combine reddish brown
brittle solid called rust or iron oxide is formed.
Note that they have entirely different properties.
An elements is the simplest substances that
compose all matter. A compounds is a
substances made of two or more kinds of
elements.
