filter funnel
spatulas
filter paper
evaporating dish
stirring rod
sulphuric acid
magnesium turnings
measuring cylinder
Diagram:

Procedure: 1. Measure 20 cm3 of 2 mol/dm3 sulphuric acid and place into a small beaker.
2. Add magnesium bit by bit until in excess (when the effervescence stops)
3. Filter the mixture
4. Heat the filtrate gently to evaporate off some of the solution until crystals start
forming around the edges.
5. Allow the partially evaporated solution to crystallize slowly.
