Cafe Terrace
Vincent Van Gogh
at Night
Café Terrace at Night, a painting by Vincent Van Gogh
completed in 1888, came under the spotlight recently when
scholars claimed to have found within it, a homage to
Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper.

And sure enough, if one looks closely, you can see that the
painting features twelve seated diners and a standing server,
and what could be seen as a cross behind the central, long-
haired figure.

David
Michaelangelo

Michelangelo would use light and shadow to give his sculptures a more
lifelike presence, he would also sometimes curve and twist his models
together to compliment the overall composition. His masterwork David is
considered one of the greatest depictions of the human form, showing a
technical skill and imaginative symbolism that was (and remains)
ground breaking. Because David was intended to be viewed from below,
Michelangelo eschewed ideal proportioning and instead carved the
head, arms, and hands much larger than the torso and legs. This
creates the illusion that David is alert and poised for action, especially
when viewed from below. The deeply furrowed brow is exaggerated, and
the right hand is especially large, possibly as a nod to David’s biblical
nickname manu fortis, or strong hand. 3

The Bird Seller
Vicente Manansala

The Bird Seller is a Cubist painting by Vicente Manansala. The painting

highlights the everyday, modern life of a Filipino man. Historically,
Manansala was at the forefront of the Modernist movement in the Philippines
and this painting is a reflection of the movement. His work was focused on the
native identity and the sensibility of a common Filipino, which is noticeable in
many of his paintings. In this painting, he has used his original technique
known as ‘transparent cubism’, which involves the layering of different shapes
and colors.
This layering helped in creating movement and depth and therefore, the
painting, even though two dimensional, seems to have a certain three-
dimensional depth.

Unfamiliar People
Takushi Murakami

Unfamiliar People” came out of the pandemic

“Unfamiliar People” is a painting on three pink panels that depicts a

traditional nuclear family – a husband, a wife and two kids. Their faces are
contorted in varying states of disgust of horror, and bewildered amusement.
They're surrounded by smaller figures, many wearing masks.

Schad says the inspiration for this painting and its interactive component
came during COVID lockdowns while Murakami watched his two children
play the popular Nintendo video game “Animal Crossing.” The children
watched a fireworks display in the game, and Murakami realized that because
of the pandemic, his kids had never seen real fireworks.
