LEARNING AREA: POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES

I. Introductory concept
Ideology according to Heywood (2007) refers to a system of beliefs about
how society should function, behave, and operate. He further explains that from a
social-scientific viewpoint, an ideology is a more or less coherent set of ideas that
provides a basis for organized political action, whether this is intended to preserve,
modify or overthrow the existing system of power relationships.

Key Concept
MAJOR POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES
Liberalism- pertains to set of political beliefs emphasizing individual rights and
liberties. Views the state as a tool or instrument of social order, it recognizes the
state in providing equal opportunities to all citizens.
Conservatism refers to set of political beliefs based on preservation of customs and
traditions that define the character of a society, conservatism Links the state with
the need to provide authority and discipline in order to protect society from chaos
and social disorder.
Socialism is defined as set of political beliefs emphasizing community and social
equality, socialism considers the state as embodiment of the common good and
approves government intervention in implementing laws concerning the welfare of
the citizens. Cooperation is more important than competition
Communism-is an economic, social and political doctrine that aims to replace
private property and a profit-based economy with public ownership and communal
control of at least the major means of production
Capitalism- is an economic system where private entities own the factors of
production. The four factors are entrepreneurship, capital goods, natural resources,
and labor. The owners of capital goods, natural resources, and entrepreneurship
exercise control through companies.
Neoliberalism- An ideology and policy model that emphasizes the value of free
market competition. Although there is considerable debate as to the defining
features of neoliberal thought and practice.
Anarchism. Society without government, laws, police or other authority. System of
self-control. It is a political ideology that advocates self-governed societies based
on voluntary institutions.
