BRUNEI
- Majority of Brunei’s population is Islam.
- Minor groups or tribes: Puak Melayu Brunei, Puak Dusun and Bisaya, Puak Tutong,
Puak Kedayan, Puak Murut, Puak Belait
- Brunei is particularly renowned for its metalwork.

2. CAMBODIA
- Minor groups or tribes: Khmer Loeu, The Chinese, Cham, Vietnamese
- Music occupied a dominant place in traditional Cambodian Culture
- Dancing and drama were also important forms of artistic expression.
- The Royal Ballet in Phom Penh specialized in the classical, highly stylized aspara
dances as well as dance-dramas.
- Tourism: The Royal Palace, Angkor Wat

3. TIMOR LESTE
- Majority of Timor Leste’s population were Roman Catholic (97.6%)
- Minor groups or tribes: Tetum, Tukudede, Kenmak, Bunak, Makasae, Mambai, Galoli,
Baikeno, Fataluku
- Culture: Hospitality is important to the East Timorese. The tubedai dance is a circle
dance performed throughout East Timor. The traditional textile of Timor Leste is
known as Tais and they are being made in two styles: mane and feto
- Tourism: Bunak House, Fataluku House, Hotel the Ramelau, Maubara and Liquica

4. INDONESIA
- Unity in Diversity
- Majority of Indonesia’s population were Muslim (87.2%)
- Tribes: Dani Tribe, Dayak Tribe, Nias Tribe, Kamoro Tribe, Wajak Tribe
- Culture: Food: Nasi Goreng
- Clothing (Kebaya), Arts (garuda, Wisnukencana)

5. LAOS
- Land of million elephants
- Approximately two thirds of Lao population identify as Buddhist (64.7%)
- Laos is ethnically diverse; three general families( Lao Sung, Lao Theung, Lao, Loum)
- Culture: Food(laap), clothing( Xout Lao), Arts( Phra Bang)
- “Lan Xang” The Lao people were a teibe originally from Yunnan China, who were
pushed south to the border of the Khmer Empire in the 13 th century. The first lao
kingdom, called lan xang or “land of the million elephants” was founded by Fa Ngum
in 1353.

6. MALAYSIA
- Malaysia, Truly Asia
- Muslim 61.3%
- Ethnic groups: Chinese (23.4%), Indoans, Anak Negri, Orang Ulu and Dayak, Orang
Asli
- Culture: Nasi Nemak (Food) , Baju Kurung (Clothing), Malaysian Batik (Arts)
- Excavations in the Niah Caves in Sarawak suggest the existence of highly active Stone
age peoples.
- The Tambun rock art is also situated in Perak.
- Sarawak’s Niah Caves, there is evidence of the oldest human remains in Malaysia,
dating back 40,000 years.

7. THAILAND
- Thailand was primarily an agricultural country but since the 1960’s increasing number
of people have moved to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. The people of Thailand are
called Tais, 94% of their population religion were Theravada Buddhist; 75% were
ethnic Thai and the remainder of the population falls into small minority groups hill
tribes, Khmer and Mons. “hill tribes”. The culture in Thailand is a mix of strong Indian
influences, Chinese Traditions and elements that are uniquely Thai. Thailand was never
colonized by the Europeans.

8. VIETNAM
- Vietnam is among the most populated countries in the ASEAN Region. The most
widespread religions are: Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Catholicism and Cao dou.
Vietnam would remain part of the Chinese Empire for over 1000 years. It was in 938
AD that Ngo Quyen defeated the Chinese and gained independence for Vietnam.
Vietnam became a French colony in 1877.
- Ethnic groups: Tay, Thai, H’mong, Muong Hoa, Dao and Nung Kihn

9. MYANMAR
- Rangoon/ Yangon is the largest city and capital of Myanmar. The official language is
Burmese. Religion in Myanmar is spread across Buddhist with 87.9%
- Colonial period: British Colonial (1826- 1886)
- Architecture:
➢ Buddhist pagodas, Htilomino Temple, Secretariat
10. SINGAPORE
- The majority of Singapore’s population has roots in China, and as such, Mandarin is
the officially recognized Chinese language. Most population in Singapore were
Buddhist.
- Singapore’s Orang Laut tribes
- Culture: Baju Kurung, and Baju Melayu is a traditional custume as well as a national
dress of Singapore.
- Singapore’s art: Nanyang
- Architecture:
