C. Materials: TV, hand outs and bowl

III. PROCEDURE
A. Preparation

B. Activities

1. Emojie
The teacher shows emojis with different facial expressions. Then, students identify the feeling words
associated with the emoji expression.

2. Picture This
The students read and analyze the poem synchronously.
It was a dark and stormy night. You sat alone in the old, dilapidated house staring out
the window. The sky was black, the wind was loud, and the rain slammed against the
broken windowpane. You shut your eyes, remembering your earlier visit, and you felt
so embarrassed and angry. When you opened them, the lightning bolt flashed and lit
up the room once more. You had to get out of the house; you had to hide. No one
could know your horrible mistake. You opened the door, took a deep breath, and ran
into the cold and rain.
After reading , the teacher will ask the following questions:
a.What image/scene did you create as you read the story?
b.What feelings did you have while reading the story?
c.What made you feel this way?
d.What words did you read that helped create this feeling?

C. Lesson Proper

Tone is the attitude of the writer or speaker toward their subject or audience. Tone is
conveyed through the words the author chooses to use and how they express their
point of view. Since tone is an attitude it is expressed using words.

Example: “Sad mother duck went up one day, over the hills and far away. Sad
mother duck said “quack quack quack, but none of her 5 little ducks came back.
Look at the word choices and phrases the author uses.
a.What is the author’s attitude toward the subject?
b. What do the underlined words express?

Mood is different because it describes the feelings of the reader or audience as

reactions to the text, the author or text evokes certain feelings in the readers through
word choice and descriptions of characters and setting.

Example: “It’s twenty-five after six and the sky still has some shades of purple
and orange…oh well just like me, I am standing here, in this secretive rooftop,
overjoyed…yet there are still some fragments of fear and haze… I wonder if
the sky is glad and excited about the night or if it is crying over the bright day
that passed.”

– Fehl Dungo – “Higher than the Rooftop”

Discussion Questions:
1.What feelings did you get after reading the story?
2.What made you say your answer? Could you give your support?
3.Look at the first and second sentence?
4.What element of the story does it express?
5.Does the setting help create the mood of the story? In what way?

Tone and mood do impact each other as the tone of a text affects the readers mood .
It may seem confusing but we actually use these every day in conversations so there
are easy ways to remember them.
Example:
Think about when you have a conversation with someone particularly about
something you feel strongly about.Your tone of voice expresses your attitude either
on the subject you are discussing or about the person you're talking to. If you're
talking about something you feel very passionately about, your tone of voice may
come off as energized and enthusiastic but if you're talking to someone you really
don't like your tone of voice may be angry annoyed or critical. As you express
yourself through your tone of voice, the person you're speaking to may have their
mood affected by their reactions to your tone depending on your tone the other
person may feel excited or anxious flattered or criticized.
So our tone can inspire a good or bad mood in the people we talk to just as our
moods may be affected by the tone someone else uses when speaking to us.

Example:
Have you ever sent a text to someone thinking you're just sending them a quick
message and suddenly later, you find out that they are angry at you because they
thought your text was rude? In some way the other person couldn't tell your tone
from your text and because they couldn't tell your attitude , they misread it and their
mood changed in the negative way.

As a result your mood shifted in a negative way this is another example of how tone
and mood impact each other. When a writer accurately controls their tone they can
inspire a proper mood reaction in their reader, but if the writer does not have good
control of their tone it will develop a mood in their reader that they didn't want or
intend.

D. Generalization
The teacher ask the following questions:
What is the difference between tone and mood?

E. Evaluation
Students are grouped. Each group picked a poem for the bowl. The group reads the
assigned poem portraying the given prevalent feelings. The audience guess what is
the expressed tone/ mood is.

The Mask by Kathy Russel

Who am I?
You think you know...
Behind this mask of a
smile is a desperate heart
hiding tears flowing, slamming
against the walls of my heart
like the rising waterscapes on a stormy day.
You think you see me for who I am,
but I allow you only to see who I wish I were.

From My Heart by Mrs. Creeves

A million stars up in the sky.
One shines brighter - I can't deny.
A love so precious, a love so true,
a love that comes from me to you.
The angels sing when you are near.
Within your arms I have nothing to fear.
You always know just what to say.
Just talking to you makes my day.
I love you, honey, with all of my heart.
Together forever and never to part.

Let Go by Parsons
What do I do,
When I'm still in love with you?
You walked away,
'Cause you didn't want to stay.
You broke my heart, you tore me apart.
Every day I wait for you,
Telling myself our love was true.
But when you don't show, more tears start to flow.
That's when I know
I have to let go.

No Celebration by John Read

What's the point of celebrating
When the ones you loved have gone?
It's only the beginning of another year,
Another year of struggling alone.

Nothing new will happen.

Nothing old will ever change.
The past has left its scars.
Now only old memories remain.

Family’s Stay
Family is everything,
In most people's eyes.
But what do you do,
When families despise?

Relatives aren't chosen,

Like we choose our friends.
This makes getting along,
Harder in the end.

So what do we do,
When we don't get along.
I suppose we all just have to,
Remember we’re lifelong.

When a friendship goes sour,

We all just walk away.
But when you're family,
You let it go and just stay.
Smile is free
A smile is cheer from you to me,
the cost is nothing, it's given for free.
They console the weary and gladden the sad.
And can make someone happy when they are mad.
Unlike blessings in which we pray
it's the only thing you keep when you give it away.

Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!
