Describe how the following organelles allow the cell to perform its primary function to make proteins: nucleus,
smooth ER, rough ER, golgi body.
Answer:
The nucleus houses cell’s DNA and then directs the synthesis of proteins and ribosomes, which are the cellular
organelles that carry out protein synthesis. In addition, the rough ER which is studded with millions of
membranes-bound ribosomes, is involved with the production and quality control of proteins. On the other hand,
smooth ER is closely linked to lipid synthesis and metabolism, as well as the production of steroid hormones.
Then the Golgi body acts as a factory in which proteins received from the ER are further processed and sorted
before being transported to their final destinations: lysosomes, the plasma membrane, or secretion.
Put each of the following organelles into one of the four columns, based on their role in metabolism.
Lysosomes Mitochondria Plasma Membrane Vacuoles
Put a check in the appropriate column(s) to indicate whether the following organelles are found in plant cells,
animal cells, or prokaryotes. Some organelles may be in one, two or more columns.
Plasma Membrane
Vacuole Ribosomes
Mitochondria
Golgi Apparatus
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Lysosome Chromatin
Nucleolus
