Introduction

Section 2: Introduction

Product Overview
The PACS Link Acquisition System is a flexible, modular system for capturing images
from a network to remote printers or other destination devices connected to a network.
The PACS Link 9405 Print Server for the 8100 connects to an Ethernet network and uses
the DICOM 3.0 protocol to receive images over the network. The images are formatted
and printed on the 8100 Laser Imager. See Section 3, Print Server for more information
about print servers.
The PACS Link 9405 system is designed for use with the 8100 Laser Imager in mobile
applications where space is limited and has been specifically tested to meet the vibration
requirement(s) for mobile applications.

Components
The PACS Link 9405 Print Server consists of the following components:
• Small, forms-factor computer running the PACS Link Print Server software.
• Intelligent UPS used to control the power to the computer.
• Associated power cords and data cables.
• Mounting hardware for the UPS and 9405 computer.

PACS Link 9405 Acquisition System User Guide

Special Terms
The following terms are used throughout this User Guide.
Acquire: The act of capturing an image in electronic form from a modality.
Film: A single sheet of media that is produced when a print command is issued from the
keypad or from the user host control. A single film can display one or multiple images,
depending on the format selected and the number of acquisitions performed.
DICOM: A standard (set of rules) for the transfer of medical images between various
electronic medical devices such as image source modalities, viewing stations, archiving
stations, etc. The PACS Link 9405 Acquisition System uses the DICOM version 3.0
standard to exchange images with other DICOM-compliant devices across an Ethernet
network.
Image: The resultant data, print or display obtained after an acquisition. Multiple images
can be printed on one film, depending on the format selected and the number of
acquisitions performed.
Modality: A medical imaging device such as a CT scanner, MRI or ultrasound imager
that provides an image output in electronic form.
MRN: A patient’s medical record number. (Not supported.)
Page: An image or a set of images printed on a single sheet of media.
Study: A set of pages usually associated with a common medical imaging procedure for
a single patient. (Not supported.)
UPS: An uninterruptable power supply used to provide power to the 9405 while it shuts
down the 9405 operating software.

Print Server

Section 3: Print Server

Product Description
The PACS Link 9405 Print Server is a print management device that connects to an
Ethernet network. It performs the following functions:
• Receives DICOM print class images sent from DICOM modalities or other DICOM-
compliant image source devices on the network.
• Converts DICOM images to a format that can be printed by a Kodak Laser Imager.
• Sends converted images to the laser imager connected to the Print Server.
The print server consists of a Windows NT™ Workstation and the application software
that controls the print server functions. A network interface for the Ethernet connection
and an interface for connection to a laser imager are included in the workstation.

Sequence of Operation
The following steps illustrate the basic sequence of operation between a DICOM image
source, the Print Server and the Laser Imager.
1. The DICOM device places an image on the network addressed to the Print Server.
2. The Print Server reads in the image from the network and stores it on the hard disk
in the workstation.
3. The Print Server converts the image to a format that is compatible with the Laser
Imager.
4. When the Laser Imager is ready, the print server sends the image to the Laser
Imager.
5. The Laser Imager prints the image on film.
The Print Server performs all of the above steps automatically without operator
intervention.
If a series of images are received at a rate faster than the Laser Imager can print them,
the Print Server will accumulate the images on the hard disk until they can be printed. If
the Laser Imager runs out of film or otherwise becomes inoperative, the Print Server will
continue to accept incoming images until the Laser Imager is returned to service or until
the hard disk becomes full.

Operation and Maintenance

The Kodak Print Server requires no special handling or preventive maintenance.
However, take care not to jar, physically damage or spill liquids onto the equipment.
Aside from turning power on or off, there are no actions that must be performed by an
operator on the Print Server.

System Power
The PACS Link 9405 Print Server is designed for mobile applications where the main
power will be turned on and off frequently. The operating software is extremely sensitive
to power interruptions and will malfunction under certain conditions if the system power
shut down procedure is not followed.

System Power Up

1. Verify the UPS power switch is in the ON position.

2. Plug in (or switch power to) the UPS. The UPS and 9405 computer will power up.
3. Verify the green power light on the UPS is illuminated.
4. Verify the green power light on the 9405 computer is illuminated.

3–6 814-4404 – 00June/Rev A

Print Server

System Power Down

1. Unplug (or switch power off) the UPS.

The system will perform an orderly shut down and the UPS will issue a warning
beep several times to indicate it is on battery power. After 120 seconds, the UPS
will remove power from the 9405 computer and 5 seconds later shut itself down.
The UPS will reactivate, power the computer and recharge any battery drain
when power is restored.

Do not power off the computer with the computer power switch or the UPS
power switch. Only switch power off the UPS.

Note
The UPS will not act on power interruptions of less than 20 seconds. If power is restored
to the UPS during the computer shutdown sequence, the UPS will automatically reset the
computer. Normal computer startup will occur and the 9405 system will be ready in
approximately 3 minutes.
