Grade Level: 9-12 Unit Title: Mental Health in Literature Materials: -Cleartouch panel - Teens Discuss Stress, Anxiety, and Mental Health video -discussion questions slides -30-40 books (see list for details) Lesson Activities: Lesson I: Introduction to Unit: The instructor will introduce the unit (Mental Health in Literature). Using the Cleartouch panel, the instructor will present “Teens Discuss Stress, Anxiety, and Mental Health” video on YouTube. There will then be a discussion using the slides of discussion questions.
Lesson II: Book Tasting: Students will divide into
groups of 4-5 and sit at a table with around 10 fiction books with themes of mental health. Students will do a “book tasting” by looking a chapter at the beginning, middle, and end. They may look through all of the books or just ones that are the most interesting to the student. Students will make notes on the story content and what themes they notice during the “tasting.”
Lesson III: Infographic Creation: If needed, instructor
will give a tutorial on how to use Canva. Students will use Canva to make an infographic/flier/picture collage based on a variety of ideas: the theme/mental health lesson of a book they sampled, positive sayings and images, or anything else that would fit appropriately in the theme of mental health in general or in literature specifically. Students will then share their projects with each other and submit their projects to the instructor. Assessment: I will do an informal assessment during the discussion lesson and determine the participation level of each student. The infographic creation will serve as a more formal assessment to determine if students understood the activity and to see if the quality of the infogrphic
