What is It
The first step in any embroidered project is choosing a design. Design means
the arrangement of line, form, color and texture with the purpose of achieving order
and beauty. A basic understanding of the elements and principles of design can
1. Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention.
2. Rhythm is a smooth movement. Without irregular motion, pattern and line
carry the eyes along. The eye links point into space automatically.
3. Balance is the visual weight distribution of objects, colors, texture, and
space. May be produced in two ways: symmetrical (formal) or asymmetrical
(informal) equilibrium. In Symmetrical balance, the elements used on one
side of the design are similar to those on the other side; the sides are
different in asymmetrical equilibrium, but still look balanced.
4. Proportion refers to the correlation in size between a part and the whole.
5. Harmony is the Law of Unity with variation. This principle infers repetition of
line, form, shape and size.
Elements of design
Color is an effective way of telling a story, conveying feelings and creating a solid
brand identity. Color may be calm, warm, bright or dull. Choosing the right color
will greatly affect the appearance of your finished project. Below is a color wheel
consisting of twelve colors which will give you an idea to have a successful choice of
color.
COLOR WHEEL
Primary Colors (Red, Yellow and blue) are the three pigment colors that cannot be
combined or created by any other color combination.
Secondary Colors (Green, Orange, and purple) are the shades where the primary
colors are mixed with.
Examples:
Red+ Blue = VIOLET
Blue+ Yellow = GREEN
Red+ Yellow = ORANGE
Tertiary Colors are the colors that are created by combining primary and
secondary colors. That’s why hue is a term for two words which includes blue-
green, yellow-green, red-violet and yellow-orange.
My Turn
Activity 1.1
By using organic forms/shapes, create your design that shows a symmetrical
balance like the picture shown below.
Your Turn
Direction: Create a symmetrically balance design using geometric shapes and color
it using coloring materials.
B. 6-10 Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it in your
activity book.
6. A type of balance in which there is a balance on both sides of a composition yet
different.
A. Asymmetrical B. Geometric C. Radial D. Symmetrical
7. Formal equilibrium is another word for which type of balance?
A. Asymmetrical B. Geometric C. Radial D. Symmetrical
8. What is the other term for "center of interest"?
A. All of the above B. Dominance C. Emphasis D. Focal Point
C. Why are principles and elements of design important? Write your thoughts in a
paragraph of three to five sentences.

b. create simple design using color scheme; and
c. value the importance of color scheme in making new design.
What’s In
Sharing Time!
Before we move on to our new lesson, let us first recall what you have learned from
the past lessons. Answer following questions:
1. What are the primary colors?
2. What are the secondary colors?
3. What are the tertiary colors?
What’s New
Direction: Look at the picture of colored popsicle below and answer the following
questions.
1. What are the missing colors to complete the 12 colors in color wheel?
2. What are your favorite colors? Why do you like those colors?
3. Do you believe that if you love color green you are nature lover?
4. Which color shows feminine color scheme?
5. Which color shows masculine color scheme?
COLOR SCHEME
Color scheme is the way of choosing colors that is used in various design. The
arrangement of colors is important in designing to achieve the desired outcome. In
color scheme, there are related colors and contrasting colors.

Sharing Time!
Before we move on to our new lesson, let us first recall what you have learned from
the past lesson by answering the following questions;
1. What is color scheme?
2. What are related colors?
3. What are contrasting colors?
What’s New
Direction: Scrutinize the picture below. What do you think is the method of
transferring design used in this picture? What are the other ways of transferring
design?
The transferring method used in this picture is tracing design. The other ways of
transferring design are Hot-iron transfer and Stamping method.
There are several ways of transferring designs on fabric. Among these are ironing,
tracing, and stamping.
A. Transferring Design
1. Hot-iron transfer
Hot iron transfer is a method of using iron to transfer the design from pattern.
These are images that can be imprinted on fabric. They are frequently used to print
onto t-shirts after placing the iron-on transfer on the fabric and pressing with an
iron or a heat press, the image is transferred to the fabric.
I will present pictures using hot-iron transfer.
2. Tracing Method
The tracing paper transfer method of marking an embroidery design on fabric using
lightweight tissue or tracing paper that you marked with your pattern. It’s also
helpful for working on dark or thick fabrics that are difficult to trace through, such
as denim or canvas.
What’s More
In this part you will engage yourself to various activities that will show your
appreciation on the methods of transferring design.
Activity 3.1.
My Turn - Create an embroidered design using tracing method and pin it to the
fabric.
1 2 3
1. Draw your embroidery pattern.
2. Place carbon paper over pattern and start tracing.
3. You may use a pencil or any sharp pointed instrument to trace the
design
Materials:
• iron
• pencil or transfer pen
• tracing paper
Steps/Procedures:
1. Preheat fabric with hot iron, no steam.
2. Place tracing paper over pattern.
3. Place transfer face down on fabric.
4. Hold in place.
5. Firmly pass over the iron
