What’s New

Your Turn to Shine

You are going to figure out or express something about the two illustrations shown
below.

Figure 1 Figure 2

Write your ideas by answering the guide questions:

1. What do the following figures reveal?
a. Figure 1:
b. Figure 2:
2. Do you believe that the two objects in Figure 1 have a relationship with each
other? Why? How about figure 2?
3. What are the principles of design and elements of design?

What is It

According to May Morris “The most important element in a successful work

is the choice of design.”

The first step in any embroidered project is choosing a design. Design means
the arrangement of line, form, color and texture with the purpose of achieving order
and beauty. A basic understanding of the elements and principles of design can

5 CO_Q1_TLE- HandProd 7/8_ Module 2

help in the process of choosing a design that is pleasing to the eye. Elements are
the implements used to create a design. Principles are strategies for deciding how
these tools will be used to create the design.
Principles of design

1. Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention.
2. Rhythm is a smooth movement. Without irregular motion, pattern and line
carry the eyes along. The eye links point into space automatically.
3. Balance is the visual weight distribution of objects, colors, texture, and
space. May be produced in two ways: symmetrical (formal) or asymmetrical
(informal) equilibrium. In Symmetrical balance, the elements used on one
side of the design are similar to those on the other side; the sides are
different in asymmetrical equilibrium, but still look balanced.
4. Proportion refers to the correlation in size between a part and the whole.
5. Harmony is the Law of Unity with variation. This principle infers repetition of
line, form, shape and size.

EMPHASIS RHYTHM BALANCE PROPORTION HARMONY

Elements of design

1. Color is light reflected off objects. It has three main characteristics:

a. Hue - the name given to a color (blue, red, etc.)
b. Value - the lightness or darkness of a color.
c. Intensity - (also known as capacity or chroma) the brightness or dullness of a
color.
2. Line is the most basic design feature; a mark used to symbolize directions or
curves.
3. Shape/Form:
a. Shape is an object or area of two dimensions which has height and width.
b. Form is an entity of three dimensions with height, width, and depth.
4. Space is a surface area having height, width and depth illusion.
5. Texture is the surface feature that can be seen or felt (rough, smooth, raised,
open etc.).

COLOR THEORY

Color is an effective way of telling a story, conveying feelings and creating a solid
brand identity. Color may be calm, warm, bright or dull. Choosing the right color
will greatly affect the appearance of your finished project. Below is a color wheel
consisting of twelve colors which will give you an idea to have a successful choice of
color.

COLOR WHEEL

Primary Colors (Red, Yellow and blue) are the three pigment colors that cannot be
combined or created by any other color combination.
Secondary Colors (Green, Orange, and purple) are the shades where the primary
colors are mixed with.
Examples:
Red+ Blue = VIOLET
Blue+ Yellow = GREEN
Red+ Yellow = ORANGE
Tertiary Colors are the colors that are created by combining primary and
secondary colors. That’s why hue is a term for two words which includes blue-
green, yellow-green, red-violet and yellow-orange.

Blue is the coolest color.

Orange is the warmest color.

What is It

COLOR SCHEME
Color scheme is the way of choosing colors that is used in various design. The
arrangement of colors is important in designing to achieve the desired outcome. In
color scheme, there are related colors and contrasting colors.

A. RELATED COLORS

a.1 Monochromatic harmony

Monochromatic refers to a color scheme which consists of one-color variations. You
can use any color to create a monochromatic color scheme. For example, adding
white to red to creates pink, adding white to blue to creates sky blue then you
could have a monochromatic color of pink and blue.

a.2 Analogous Harmony

Analogous colors are three-color groups along the color wheel next to each other,
and a tertiary.

3 Ways of Transferring Design

Learning Objectives:

a. Identify the ways of transferring designs,

b. Create a pattern using ways of transferring designs, and
c. Appreciate the importance of transferring designs in embroidery.

What’s In

Sharing Time!
Before we move on to our new lesson, let us first recall what you have learned from
the past lesson by answering the following questions;
1. What is color scheme?
2. What are related colors?
3. What are contrasting colors?

What’s New

Direction: Scrutinize the picture below. What do you think is the method of
transferring design used in this picture? What are the other ways of transferring
design?

The transferring method used in this picture is tracing design. The other ways of
transferring design are Hot-iron transfer and Stamping method.

14 CO_Q1_TLE- HandProd 7/8_ Module 2

What is It

There are several ways of transferring designs on fabric. Among these are ironing,
tracing, and stamping.
A. Transferring Design

1. Hot-iron transfer
Hot iron transfer is a method of using iron to transfer the design from pattern.
These are images that can be imprinted on fabric. They are frequently used to print
onto t-shirts after placing the iron-on transfer on the fabric and pressing with an
iron or a heat press, the image is transferred to the fabric.
I will present pictures using hot-iron transfer.

Steps in Hot-iron Transfer

1. Remove excess paper around the design.
2. Place the design on the fabric, then pin the corners.
3. Set flat iron at low setting before pressing it over an area of the design for
a new second.
4. Lift the iron then moves it to another area of the design.

2. Tracing Method
The tracing paper transfer method of marking an embroidery design on fabric using
lightweight tissue or tracing paper that you marked with your pattern. It’s also
helpful for working on dark or thick fabrics that are difficult to trace through, such
as denim or canvas.

Steps in Tracing Method

1. Paste your design right side up on your fabric then pin at the corners.
2. Using a tracing wheel, cover the lines of the designs.
3. You may use a pencil or any sharp pointed instrument to trace the design.

15 CO_Q1_TLE- HandProd 7/8_ Module 2

3. Stamping Method
Stamping is a simple but highly effective way of making prints and patterns of
fabric. Stamping helps to apply paint in unique designs. In transferring designs by
stamping you’ll need soft absorbent cloth.

Steps in Stamping Method

1. Form a ball made of piece of cloth.

2. Mix coloring and a little bit of kerosene to make a smooth thin paste. This
will be your reddish or greenish mixture.
3. Spread sheet of newspaper on a flat surface. Lay the fabrics on the
newspapers.
4. Place the perforated pattern side up on the part of the fabric where the
design is to be placed then pin the corners of the design.
5. Dip the ball of cloth in reddish mixture.
6. Rub the ball of cloth over the design in one direction only.
7. Lift the one corner to check if the design had been correctly transferred.
8. If the design has been fully transferred, you can remove the perforated
pattern.

What’s More

In this part you will engage yourself to various activities that will show your
appreciation on the methods of transferring design.

Activity 3.1.
My Turn - Create an embroidered design using tracing method and pin it to the
fabric.
