IV. PROCEDURE
A. Reviewing Previous How do you unlock the meaning of the words?

Read the sentences carefully. Notice that there are underlined and italicized words in each
sentence. Write S if the context clue is Synonym, A for Antonym, I for inference and D for
Definition.
Example. Studying and working at the same time seems a herculean task for a little child.
Herculean – little = Antonym so the answer is A

New Skills # 1 1. Restatement/Synonym Clues – a synonym, or word with the same meaning is
used in the sentence in a simple way.

Example: My friend’s argument is fallacious, misleading, plain wrong.

2. Contrast/Antonym Clues – A word or group of words that has the opposite


meaning reveal the meaning of an unknown term.
Example: It’s true that women are loquacious, others hardly talk at all

3. Definition/Explanation – the unknown word is explained within the sentence


or in sentence immediately preceding.

Example: The patient is so somnolent, that she requires medication to help her
stay awake.

4. Inference/General Context Clues – Sometimes a word or phrase is not


immediately clarified within the same sentence. Relationships, which are not
directly apparent, are inferred or implied. The reader must look for clues within,
before and after the sentence in which the word is used.
Example: “The haberdashery was Lou’s favorite place. He loved shopping for
nice suits. The people who worked there were so kind and helpful.”
