1. How does the environment’s condition influence the quality and survival of life?
- It has an impact on our lives because of what we do in our surroundings. If we do
something positive, the result is positive; if we do something negative, the effect is
negative.

2. Describe your local government's response to environmental issues in your

community.
- Through the joint forces of General Services Office (GSO) and Municipal
Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), the Task Force Basura was
created. It is a specific body under GSO that handles the strict implementation of
the proper waste disposal in the community. Permanent installation of backhoes
on some of the local flood-prone areas to minimize the flood caused by heavy rain
in the town. There are also continuous de-clogging activities that is often done on
the different barangays with the help of the Flood Control Group under the
Engineering Department. The local government unit continuously supports and
participates in this provincial environment advocacy with its strict ordinances
regarding Proper Waste Management and the constant de-clogging of waterways,
especially in flood-prone areas.

3. Explain the essay written by the late poet and environmental advocate, Jose
Victor Penaranda, entitled "Silent Emergency", about how our relationship with
nature needs some rethinking:

“Our alienation from Nature is subtle and barely recognizable, but it has
reached the level of emergency. Societies have shaped a culture that values Nature
only in terms of its usefulness to human beings. And so we refer to „natural
resources‟ rather than to aquatic and terrestrial life. The word „resources‟ implies
utility. Those belonging to the mineral, plant, and animal kingdoms are dispensable
and can be exploited absolutely to serve the needs of humankind. We have
imposed our self-centeredness on the planet quite successfully and have detached
ourselves from Nature by completely forgetting that the sacred breath that gives
life to human beings is the same breath that gives life to the whole Earth.”

Let us be more mindful of how our actions and behavior affect the environment.
We may be facing a silent emergency, but it‟s still an emergency, albeit without
the siren.

- The essay explains that we people slowly destroy their natural resources and
habitat, we no longer realize that nature is being depleted because of our desires
to get our necessities in life. If we continue to destroy their homes and the source
of their food will have a big negative effect not for them but also for us. We must

think first our action to the environment so that we can have a peace and fertile
environment. We must learn to reuse, reduce and recycle so that our can breath
peacefully.
