Lesson 3 PART 4 Floating Bodies
Lesson 3 PART 4 Floating Bodies
Use (-) if G is above BO and (+) if G is below BO. Note that M is always above BO.
Stability of Floating Bodies:
Value of MBO
Where:
W = weight of the body
BF = buoyant force
M = metacenter
G = center of gravity of the body
BO = center of buoyancy in upright position
BO' = center of buoyancy in tilted position
MG = metacentric height or the distance from M to G
MBO = distance from M to BO
GO = distance from G to BO
v = volume of the wedge either immersion or emersion
s = horizontal distance between the center of gravity of the wedges
θ = angle of tilting
I = moment of inertia of the waterline section of the body
RM = righting moment
OM = overturning moment
Sample Problem #1:
A plastic cube of side L and sg= 0.82 is placed vertically in
water. Is the cube stable?

Sample Problem #2:
A block of wood (sg= 0.64) is in the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped
having a 10cm square base. If the block floats in salt water with its square base
horizontal, what is its maximum height for stable equilibrium in the upright position?
Sample Problem #3:
A wood cone, 700mm diameter and 1,000mm high floats in water with its vertex down.
If the sg of wood is 0.60, would it be stable? Determine also its initial metacentric height.
Sample Problem #4:
A rectangular scow 9m wide, 15m long, and 3.6m high has a draft in sea water of
2.4m. Its center of gravity is 2.7m above the bottom of the scow. Determine the following:
a. The initial metacentric height.
b. The righting or overturning moment when the scow tilts until one side is just at the
point of submergence.
