STATEMENT OF THE

PROBLEM
Practical Research 2
Asking
question drives
people to
ponder
How do we ask
questions that
have valid
significance in
relation to the
study?
OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, you should have been able to:
·Identify what constitutes a good research question;
·Formulate research questions;
·Explain the process of formulating research questions;
·Determine elements present on the statement of the
problem; and
·Write the statement of the problem through the research
questions formulated.
Activity 1: Picture Query
Formulate 3 questio ns regard in g th e situ atio n po rt rays by
the pictures below. Fr om th e q ue st io ns fo rm ul ated , yo u
shall formulate a stat em en t desc ribing th e pro blem
exemplified by the pictures.
Activity 1: Picture Query
Processing Questions:
·Did you find formulating questions easy
or difficult? Why?
·How did the questions help you formulate
the statement of the problem?
·Why is it necessary to formulate good
questions when analyzing a problem?

Essential Question
How do I write an
effective Statement of
the Problem?
STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
Practical Research 2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
·It clearly states the main problem, written
either as a declarative statement or as a
question, broken down into specific sub-
problems (research questions)
·The general problem is followed by an
enumeration of the specific problems. the
specific problems are usually stated as
questions that the researcher seeks to
answer.
EXAMPLE
This study aims to assess the behavioral
traits of senior high school students and
to relate them to the productivity level in
reviewing lessons and passing the long
examinations. This study is to be conducted
during the first semester of SY 2016-
2017 in the Division of Palo, Leyte.
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS PRESENT IN THE
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
·“This study (or research) aims to... (make
congruent with title).”
·“Specifically, this research (or study)
seeks to answer the following questions:”
IMPORTANT ELEMENTS IN THE STATEMENT OF
THE PROBLEM
·Main Tasks
·Main or major variables
·Participants
·Specific Setting
·If developmental research, intended
outputs
DO’S WHEN WRITING SOP
·The main problem is stated
in declarative form.
·The main problem should reflect the title
and the objective of the study.
·The specific problems are written in
question form.
DO’S WHEN WRITING SOP
·They must define the population and the
sample, that is, the respondents or
subjects of the study.
·They must identify the variables being
studied.
·They must be empirically tested.
TYPES OF RESEARCH QUESTIONS
·Factor-isolating Questions
·Factor-relating Questions
·Situation relating Questions
·Situation-producing Questions
REVIEW TIME!!
·Why is there a need to indicate the purpose
statement in the making of the Statement of
the Problem?

·How helpful are the research questions in

the conduct of

the study?
·What happens when there is no Statement
of the Problem in a research paper?
