Setting :
 Setting of Time : For many years, then one day, one afternoon, at half past
five, 3rd December 1878, this morning, on 28 th April 1882, 4th May 1882, One day in
1882, last night, nearly eight o’clock in the morning, A few minutes later, At three
o’clock in the afternoon, At the moment, Eight o’clock tonight, at seven o’clock that
evening, When I (Watson) got back to Baker Street.
 Setting of Place : in London, in Afghanistan, 221B Baker Street, in the centre
of city, to England, in the cab, in India, outside a house, in a dark quiet street,
Pondicherry Lodge, in the house, in the ceiling of the room, 3 Pinchin Lane, in
Thaddeus Sholto’s cab, on the jetty, in the bank river, on the deck of Aurora, on the
launch, to Baker Street.

Summary :

Dr. Watson has shared his apartment with Sherlock Holmes, the clever private detective, for
many years since he has retired from British Army. They lived in 221B Baker Street. And Since Dr.
Watson retired from Army, he helped Sherlock Holmes. One day, a young woman, Miss Morstan
asks to Sherlock Holmes to help her. Her father, Captain Morstan, was disappeared for ten years,
and four years after her father disappeared, she got a advertisement in newspaper that she have
to send her address if want information about her father. And after she sends her address, every
year she gets pearls without letters who send that. But, now, she got a letter that tells to her to
come to Lyceum Theatre. And she asks Holmes and Watson to accompany her. They met with a
servant that brings them to Thaddeus Sholto, the son of Major Sholto, friend of Captain Morstan.
He tells to them how the Captain Morstan’s die. He also tells to them about The Great Agra
Treasure which found by Captain Morstan and his father, Major Sholto. The treasure, now hidden
at Pondicherry Lodge, his father’s house, and Sholto has found it. They go there tonight, to give
the Miss Morstan’s share. But when they arrived, they found that Bartholomew, Sholto’s brother,
has dead. Someone kill him with a poisonous thorn. Holmes finds that the murderer is a pygmy
with his friend, a wooden-leg. Then, the police come and the inspector makes a fool decision. He
arrest Thaddeus Sholto and say if he is the murderer. But Holmes didn’t believe that Sholto is the
murderer, and then Holmes and Watson investigate who is the murderer. They found a footstep,
and they follow the footstep with use a dog. Then, they found that the murderer has rent a
Steam Launch, and found the Steam Launch in boatyard. They join with inspector and waited to
the steam launch come out from boatyard, and then, they chase it. The pygmy was shot, fall
down to the river and they catch the wooden-leg. The wooden-leg, Jonathan Small, is one of The
Sign of Four, the real one who found the treasure. He tells the story, that Major Sholto and
Captain Morstan knew the treasure from him and his friends (The Sign of Four), and Major Sholto
become greedy to keep the treasure himself. And he tell that he want to revenge to Sholto’s
family. He said that he was threw the treasure in the river. And all become misery, but behind
that misery, there’s little happiness, Watson was applies Miss Morstan to married with him.

Comment :

I think this novel is interesting, the writer make us imagine about the mystery of the case.
We entertained with the mystery and stories of mystery solving. I think this novel is easy to read,
and this novel helps us with add glossary in the end of page. So, when we find a difficulty, we can
look at glossary.
