identification of the issue

There is a significant gender participation gap in mountain, ultra, and trail running.
While both male and female participation in the sport has grown rapidly since 2000,
a large majority of participants are still men. The gender gap may exist for many
reasons, but we’ll be focusing at the global issue of women’s safety.

Women don't get the luxury of running on trails, walking on a deserted road or
hiking through woods without fear. Women who spend solitary time outdoors know
what it's like to be on guard even through the pleasure of adrenaline and the
euphoria of endorphins.

A 2019 Runner's World survey found that 84 percent of women had experienced
some kind of harassment while running that made them feel unsafe, including
groping, being followed or flashed, as well as subtler catcalls and lewd comments.

THE FEAR WOMEN FEEL ON THE RUN IS REAL AND PERVASIVE

CONCEPT NOTE
Women safety has always been an issue even in these modern times with so much advancement in technology. Women are not safe
anywhere and are most vulnerable when traveling alone into lonely roads and deserted places. Existing hand held safety devices for
women require human intervention for activating the app/device such as pressing the button or shake the device etc after sensing the
danger. We propose a solution which will try to overcome the disadvantages of the existing systems and also aim at providing foolproof
safety to women. The proposed work aims at designing a multifunctional smart outdoor jacket prototype by integrating information
technology (IT) into clothing that senses, recognizes, responds, and manages various safety risks and potentially hazardous situations.
The aim is to develop an IoT based wearable device which works on the concept of voice recognition, cloud computing that helps women
in the case of emergency. The device can send SOS messages to nearby help centre based on the person’s location when it is activated. The
device can also collect evidence for further legal procedures and save them in a remote storage. The concepts of Internet of Things (IoT),
Voice Recognition and Cloud Computing are used to achieve this. The objective is to use these concepts to develop a working prototype
of a smart safety device. There are various types of medical sensors that can be used by the Arduino Sensor Plat-form. These sensors are:
SPO2, airflow (breathing), body temperature, ECG, glucometer, galvanic skin response, patient position, muscle/electromyography sensor
(EMG) etc. The camera will help to detect the face of the attacker and the attacker could be easily recognised. Because of the buzzers in
the system; as soon as the attacker will try to attack then the loud sound will come from it. For the enhancement of the apparel there can
be tasers added to the circuit so that the attacker will get tased and won’t be able to attack. In the mean time the location can be tracked
by the police stations as notifications will be sent regarding the mishap.

MERINO WOOL
Material research
01
Merino wool is one of the world’s most popular fabric materials. Derived from Merino
sheep, merino wool is both inexpensive and durable, adding to its appeal. Like all types
of wool, merino wool is also highly absorbent, water-resistant, and insulative, making
garments made with this type of wool popular for undergarments worn under winter
clothing. Merino Wool is a perfect all-year-round suiting fabric. Effortlessly elegant and
sleek, it can be tailored to fit every body shape. Designers love Merino for its natural
drape and handle and the wide variety of weights, styles and weaves it has to offer.
Tailors are delighted to work with Merino suiting fabrics as they are so easy to cut and
iron, besides they won’t fray or crush with handling.
A brilliant result of evolution and selective breeding, Merino wool is exquisitely soft,
skin-friendly and suitable for any project.

ECONYL
Material research

Recycled polyamide is usually made from pre-consumer fabric waste, though it may also
come from post-consumer materials like industrial fishing nets. There are several “chain
of custody” standards that track recycled polyamide through the supply chain, including
the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS), Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and SCS Recycled
Content. Probably the best-known regenerated polyamide product is ECONYL®, the
first post-consumer recycled polyamide to hit the market from Italian manufacturer
Aquafil. ECONYL® is made of polyamide waste from landfills and oceans in a closed-
loop process and is infinitely recyclable. According to Aquafil, ECONYL® avoids
approximately 50 percent of carbon dioxide emissions and uses approximately 50 percent
less energy compared to virgin polyamide yarns.

Roica is the most popular range from Japanese yarn producer, Asahei Kasei. It has
two sustainable options available, which are used for various applications.
• Roica EcoSmart EF Elastane was the
world's first stretch yarn made from
recycled polyester; and
• Roica V550 is an eco friendly elastane
suitable for producing underwear, lace,
and narrow fabrics.
• Nilit EcoCare uses recycled fibres
without sacrificing performance for a
yarn suitable for intimate apparel,
legwear and activewear. 15
