Nomenclature Of

Grinding Wheel.
Definition:-
 A grinding wheel is a multitooth cutter made up of
many hard particles known as abrasives which have
been crushed to leave sharped edges for machining.
 Every grinding wheel has two constituents:-
i. Abrasive used for cutting.
ii. Bond that holds the abrasive grains.
 Classification Of Grinding Wheel
 According To Bonding Material:
I. Vitrified Bond (V).
II. Silicate Bond (S).

 Grades Of Wheels:
I. Soft Grade Wheel.
II. Hard Grade Wheel.

 Structures:
I. Open Structure Wheel.
II. Close Structure Wheel.
 Shape Of Wheel:
I. As Shown In Figure 1.
I. Silicon Carbide (Si)
II. Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3)
1.Types Of III. Boron Nitride (BNO3)
Abrasive IV. Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)
Particles V. Diamond
 Approximate Size Of Abrasive
Particles.
Grits: The grain or grit number in a general way the size of abrasive
grains used in making a wheel ,or the size of cutting teeth, since
grinding is a true cutting operation.
2.GRIT Grain size is denoted by a number indicating the number of meshes
per linear inch (25.4 mm) of the screen through which the grain pass
when they are graded after crushing. The following list ranging from
very coarse to very fine includes all the ordinary grain sizes
commonly used in manufacturing of grinding wheels.
 Wheel Grade
 The term grade as applied to a grinding wheel refers to
the tenacity with which bond holds the abrasive grains
in place, and does not refer to hardness of the abrasive.
A wheel from which the grains are released rapidly
during the grinding operation is called soft grade,
3.GRADE whereas wheel that retains the grains more securely is
called hard grade.
 Abrasive grains are not packed tightly in a wheel but
are disturbed through the bond.
 The primary purpose of the structure is to provide
4.STRUCTURE clearance of chip and it may be open or dense
 The structure commonly used is denoted by numbers
as follows:
A.Vitrified bond (V)
B. Silicate bond (S)
5. TYPES OF C.Oxychloride bond (O)
BONDING D.Resinoid bond (B)
MATERIALS E. Shellac bond (E)
F. Rubber bond (R)
