Orientation mode allows for the Champ Gyro & Champ Navigator to take orientation
surveys of down-hole tools (motors, wedges etc.) using high-side or gyro tool-face
values. These instructions assume the user is familiar with the process of orienting
down hole tools and pertain to Axis product operation only.
Follow the following steps to perform an orientation:
1. Set up the probe to be oriented (wedge or motor) flat on the bench with high side up;
2. Fit muleshoe to probe and tighten;
3. Assuming battery is charged and connected to probe, wake probe up by rolling 360
degrees while in a horizontal position;
4. Seat muleshoe in the orientation sub;
5. Hold the tablet close to the communication window on the probe;
6. Select “Arm Probe” from the main menu on the hand held unit;

7. The “Arm Probe” screen will appear:

• Inclined or Vertical Orientation If you are orienting a probe at a point in the hole that
is less than 5 degrees from vertical choose “Vertical Orientation” from the drop
down menu, if you are orienting a tool at a point in the hole that is more than 5
degrees from vertical choose “Inclined Orientation” from the drop down menu;

• Hold Off - You do not need to set any hold off (delay until the probe wakes up),
however setting hold off so that the tool wakes up on the way down the hole may
save battery life depending on the depth of the hole and the amount of time it will
take you to run the drill pipe back in with the down-hole tool attached. If you wish to
take a check shot on surface in the slips (recommended) leave the hold off at 1
minute;
• Select “OK”.
8. The software will now ask you if you wish to retain the orientation offset from the
previous survey; if you are setting up a motor or wedge for the first time on surface
press “No”, if you have already performed the surface set up and you are about to
run the Champ probe down for a check shot press “Yes”

9. You will now be asked to confirm that the down-hole tool and the Champ probe are
set with the down hole tool high side pointing up. Press “OK” if this is the case.

The following screen will appear while the Champ probe takes readings to set its
internal tool-face, do not move the tool during this process and do not move the tablet
away from the Champ probe as the probe and Tablet are communicating while this is
occurring.

Once the following screen appears you can move the tablet away from the Champ
probe, remove the tool from the orientation sub and put the Champ probe to one side
while the wedge/motor is raised into the mast and or run into the hole.

10. Once the probe powers up you will see the following screen, the tool is now ready
to take a reading of an orientation.

probe and take another survey if you wish or you can press the end survey button
to end the survey process then retrieve the probe from the hole.

13. Once the probe has been retrieved wake the probe coms up by rolling probe 360
degrees while in a horizontal position. Ensure the communication window on the
tool is pointing at the hand held and you are less than 2 metres away from the tool,
select “Read Probe” from the main menu.

14. The hand held will establish communication with the probe and go through a down
load process, ensure the hand held remains within 2 metres if the probe during this
process, once this process is complete you will be presented with the following
screen;

• At this point you will need to create a hole name and once entered press OK. Only
hole name need be entered, a prefix is not required.

15. The Tie In screen will now appear. Latitude is the only input required at this point and
is important for survey accuracy.
 Correct latitude can be sourced from your Geologist or iPhone "Compass"
application
 Ensure you enter a "-" prefix for southern hemisphere (indicating south of equator)
 Latitude must be entered as decimal degrees.
 Latitude in degrees ° minutes ' and second " can be converted to decimal as
follows:
 -28° 30' 15"

 Round seconds to nearest minute or round down to 28°, 30'

 Convert minutes to decimal by dividing minutes by 60

 = Latitude -28.5

 If you are unsure Latitude can be corrected post survey in Champ software.

16. After completing the Tie In information the following screen will appear, filling in the
details is not required, you can just OK it.

17. The next screen to appear will be the view survey screen; this will show the results
of your orientation survey, the screen can be expended to display the azimuth of the
survey by pressing “<<View>>”.
