AXIS | CHAMP GYRO

Quality Control Principles
Introduction

The Axis Mining Technology Champ Gyro is a MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-system) sensor

based North Seeking Gyro survey tool. The use of MEMS sensors gives the tool a very robust
nature and allows the tool to be used in hostile environments with much less likelihood of
damage or loss of calibration than conventional rotating mass gyro survey tools.

The Champ Gyro performs discrete gyro compass measurements at each survey point, in a
similar manner to how a magnetic survey tool gathers data (albeit the Champ gyro is referencing
true north rather than magnetic north). Each survey point is independent to the shot before or
after it; if one survey point has failed quality control it can be removed without any effect on the
remainder of the shots in the survey run.

Quality Control

Internal QC

The Champ Gyro software analyses each gyrocompass reading (survey point) for sensor
performance (earth rate out of range, bias slope high etc.) and external influence (mainly from
temperature and movement/vibration). Shots that fail this QC are flagged in the final results. In
most instances movement is the cause of a failed shot. Should one of the on-board sensors or
systems fail, this detail is also reported in the QC data available to the operator as well as being
noted in the final results.

External QC

As with all survey tools, the Champ Gyro should be tested in a test fixture with known inclination
and direction at regular intervals to ensure the tool is performing within specification. By nature
the Champ Gyro does not tend to give randomly erroneous readings if out of calibration, rather
the tool will read out by some generally consistent value which can be seen in a test fixture
routine. Random or irregular errors in the results are usually the result of a failed sensor or
system within the tool which is generally reported by the Internal QC routine.
