Midterm Exam

1. Find the change in volume of an aluminum sphere of 10.0 cm radius when it is heated
from 0 to 1000C.
2. The specific heat of mercury is 0.033 kcal/kg ¿ 0C. Determine the latent heat of fusion of
mercury using the following calorimeter data: 1.00 kg of solid Hg at its melting point of -
39.00C is placed in a 0.620 kg aluminum calorimeter with 0.400 kg of water at 12.800C;
the resulting equilibrium temperature is 5.060C.
3. What is the rms speed of nitrogen molecules contained in an 8.0 m3 volume at 2.1 atm if
the total amount of nitrogen is 1300 mol?
4. Approximately how much radiation does a person, of total area 1.5 m2, absorb per hour
from the sun when it makes a 400 angle to the vertical on a clear day? Assume e=0 . 80 .

Final Exam
1. A cylinder has a well-fitted 2.0 kg metal piston whose cross-sectional
area is 2.0cm2. The cylinder contains water and steam at 1000C. The
piston is observed to fall slowly at a rate of 0.30 cm/s because heat
flows out of the cylinder through the cylinder walls. As this happens,
some steam condenses in the chamber. The density of the steam inside
the chamber is 6.0 x 10-4 gm/cm3.
a. Calculate the rate of condensation of steam.
b. What is the rate of change of internal energy of the steam and water
inside the chamber?
c. At what rate is heat leaving the chamber?

2. a. A Carnot engine operates between a hot reservoir at 3200 K and a cold reservoir at
2600 K. If it absorbs 500 joules of heat at the hot reservoir, how much work does it
deliver?
b. If the same engine, working in reverse, functions as a refrigerator between the same
two reservoirs, how much work must be supplied to remove 1000 joules of heat from
the cold reservoir?

3. One mole of a monoatomic ideal gas initially at a volume of 10 liters and a temperature
of 3000 K is heated at constant volume to a temperature of 6000 K, allowed to expand
isothermally to its initial pressure and finally compressed isobarically to its original
volume, pressure and temperature
a. Compute the heat input to the system during one cycle.
b. What is the net work done by the gas during one cycle?
c. What is the efficiency of this cycle?

Long Exam 2
1. A thermodynamic system is taken from an initial state A to another B and back again to
A, via state C, as shown by the path A-B-C-A in the pV diagram of the figure below
a. Complete the table in the figure below by filling in appropriate + or – indications for
the signs of the thermodynamic quantities associated with each process.
b. Calculate the numerical value of the work done by the system for the complete
cycle A-B-C-A.

2. The motor in a refrigerator has a power output of 200 watts. If the freezing compartment
is at 2700K and the outside air is at 3000K, assuming ideal efficiency, what is the
maximum amount of heat that can be extracted from the freezing compartment in 10
min?
