    Algonquin Park was established in 1893 as a wildlife sanctuary and its name was changed in 1913 to Algonquin Provincial Park. The park contains igneous rocks, sand, gravel and diverse flora such as sugar maple, hemlock, yellow birch forests, Canadian bunchberry, mushrooms, spruce bogs and pink lady's-slipper. Its wildlife includes mammals like moose, otter and black bear as well as birds such as blue jays, barn owls and blue herons and reptiles/amphibians like bullfrogs, wood turtles and common garter snakes.
