retracting slippery dense tissue that
is being removed; commonly used
for tonsils, vaginal, breast, and
thyroid tissues.

Allis Forceps

Long grasping forceps with a

proximal port that leads to rounded
fenestrated and horizontally
serrated jaws. These forceps are
used to hold the cholangiogram
catheter and guide it into the
common bile duct for injection of
the contrast medium.

lengths. This is used to stop flow in
a vessel and to clamp vessel loops
encircling a vessel.

serrations running the length of the
jaws and with a single tooth on the
inner jaws. Used for clamping
vessels and uterine ligaments during
a hysterectomy.

serrations running the length of the
jaws and with a single or double
tooth on the inner jaws; can have
either straight or curved jaws. Used
for clamping vessels and ligaments
during a hysterectomy.

OCCLUDING

Instruments Description & Use(s)

This clamp has curved shanks with
DeBakey design serrations in the
jaws. A multi-purpose clamp which
can be used in partial occlusion or
total occlusion; it is also used to
tunnel under the tissues to pull a
graft through to its distal
Debakey Aortic Clamp anastomosis.

A ratcheted clamp with straight,

curved, or various angled jaws that
have DeBakey style serrations. This
is a total occlusion clamp.

Debakey Peripheral Vascular Clamp

The clamp comes in a variety of

lengths, with
noncrushing jaws of the DeBakey
design and ratchet handles. Used
for partially occluding vessels.

Satinksy Clamp
IV. EXPOSING & RETRACTING

EXPOSING

Instruments Description & Use(s)

A self-retaining speculum with

rounded blades that open by
squeezing the handles together.
Used for providing exposure for
visualization of the anus and rectum.

Pratt Rectal Speculum

A handheld retractor with a right-

angle convex blade that extends to
a hollow grip handle. Used for
providing exposure for visualization
of the anus and rectum.

Sawyer Rectal Speculum

RETRACTING

Instruments Description & Use(s)

A flat stainless steel strip that

resembles a question mark. Used for
deep retraction of organs and
viscera.

Devear Retractor (Rish Retractor)

with a lateral curvature of the
blades. Used for retraction of wound
edges.

Richarson-Eastman Retractor
(Double-
Ended Rich Retractors)
V. SUTURING & STAPLING

SUTURING

Instruments Description & Use(s)

Polyester sutures have excellent

tensile strength, soft and pliable
with excellent braiding and are an
excellent choice for cardiovascular
and ophthalmic surgery. This type of
suture secures patches, used to
close ventricular septal defects, or
to secure prosthetic valves.

Polyester Sutures

Silk sutures are usually classified as

non-absorbable, but they are
subject to a slow process of
proteolysis absorption. It is widely
used as ligature and are also used
for other applications like skin,
ophthalmic, GI tract, etc. and are not
indicated for use in biliary and
urinary tract surgery.

Silk Sutures
STAPLING

Instruments Description & Use(s)

A designed with grooves on the

inside jaw surfaces of the applier to
increase in-jaw clip security. Clips
used in transplant surgery to extract
the donor organs to clip the artery
and vein from the donor and
recipient side.

Ligaclip

Disposable reloadable stapler that

distributes a double or triple
staggered row of titanium staples.
Used for transection and resection
of tissues during abdominal,
gynecologic, pediatric, and thoracic
surgeries.

Linear Cutters
VI. VIEWING

VIEWING

Instruments Description & Use(s)

This is an all-in-one endoscope with

camera, endoscope, and light cord
combined. Used for the visualization
of body cavities, internal organs,
and other structures through an
instrument port in laparoscopic
procedures.

Endoeye

A the distal end of the camera is the

coupler that attaches the camera to
the eyepiece of the rigid scope.
Used for transmission images from
the rigid telescope to the video
monitor.

for suctioning in confined spaces
such as the nasal cavity, in lumbar
and cervical procedures, or in
craniotomies.

Frazier Suction Tip

A hollow plastic tube with a grip

handle and a slightly bent shaft that
terminates with a bulbous tip and
large opening. Used for suctioning in
all types of wounds and allows for
effective suctioning without
aspiration damage to the
surrounding tissue.

Yankauer Suction Tip

ASPIRATING

Instruments Description & Use(s)

bivalve; one is for suction and the
other for irrigation. This suction tip
is used for irrigating and aspirating
fluid and debris from the surgical
site.

VIII. DILATING & PROBING

DILATING

Instruments Description & Use(s)

Has an oval, solid stainless steel tip

that attaches to a narrowed stem,
which extends to a solid, smooth
handle. Used to open and expand
the common bile duct to allow
passage of bile from the liver.

diamond-shaped plate, with the wire
on one side larger
than that on the other. Used for
probing and gradually dilating the
lacrimal duct, this instrument is also
used to dilate the salivary duct
opening under the tongue.
