LABORATORY 4

COURSE HIGHWAY ENGINEERING

COURSE CODE ECG344

LEVEL OF OPENNESS 2

CATEGORY PARTIALLY OPEN ENDED

DEGREE OF OPEN-ENDED (%) 67

PERIOD OF ACTIVITY 2 WEEKS

JUNCTION CAPACITY
TITLE

Introduction
Level 2 laboratory activities refer to the condition where only the problem
is guided and given. Students are required to find the ways & means and
provide the answers to the given assignment using the group creativity and
innovativeness. The activity will enable the students to appreciate
independent learning and prepare them for a much harder task of open
ended laboratory activities.

Traffic flows can be reasonably well when the rate of flow is less than at
capacity, but excessive delay and congestion can occur when the rate of
flow is at or near capacity. In this laboratory activity students will be
exposed to the appropriate methods to carry out Traffic Volume Study.

PREAMBLE
Objectives
The objective of the test is:

1. To determine the capacity of an unsignalized intersection.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the laboratory activities, students would be able to:

1. Organizing the traffic study at the unsignalized intersection and to

determine its capacity.
2. Produce laboratory report in a team
3. Work in group to produce technical report.

Theoretical Background

Capacity is the ability of a junction or roadway to cater the traffic capacity.

Thus, this is important to be analyzed to estimate the maximum amount of
traffic that can be accommodated by a roadway or junction while
maintaining its quality and to make sure the traffic is in tolerable delay to
avoid accident. Thus, planning and constructing better intersection is
important to make sure this problem can reduce. This can be determined
by finding the Level of Service (LOS). Level of Service (LOS) uses
qualitative measures that characterized both operational condition within a
traffic stream. The concept of LOS at unsignalized intersections is the
resulting stopped delay per vehicle which gives indications of driver
frustration, discomfort, lost travel time and fuel consumption.

An unsignalized T-junction near the entrance of UiTM Kampus Kota

Samarahan is experiencing congestion especially during peak hours
(morning & evening). This congestion has caused delayed for some staffs
and students to reach the campus.
PROBLEM STATEMENT The campus management has appointed you and your team to conduct the
traffic study at the T-junction in order to propose the best solution based on
the data collected.
Your team has to form a strategy to collect the data and present the report
to the management.

Apparatus & Procedures

Students need to acquire knowledge on the suitable apparatus, procedures

and booking forms prior conducting this laboratory session. All references
WAYS & MEANS including consultations with instructors/lecturers or expert need to be
(OPEN) properly listed in this report.

All procedures and book forms have to be checked and verified by

instructor/lecturer before the study.

Analysis of Result
Students have to acquire ways to present collected data and to determine
important parameters from the study.
All references have to be listed using standard format or given by the
lecturer.

ANSWERS Discussion and Conclusion

(Open) Students have to write discussion and conclusion based on the objectives
of the study.
The group is required to submit the technical report of the laboratory results
highlighting the data acquisition process, analysis carried out and the
relevancy of the set-out output to achieve the objective. In the report each
group must present solutions to the problem that may arise in the traffic
intersection studies based on the data obtained from the laboratory tests.

The report must be submitted 7 days after the laboratory date
