Welcome to...
…a slice of reality
T
the process of de-cluttering my tool
inventory over the last few months
got me thinking about the tool supply
chain in general. I’m fascinated by old tool
catalogues especially those from the height
of production between the late 19th and
early 20th centuries; wooden planes were
being churned out by the thousand just
as metal ones were preparing for world
domination in tens of thousands. As
interesting as these tools and their
provenance is, you can’t help but feel that
maybe some of them were developed to
solve problems that didn’t really exist.
The whole idea that years down the line
these products are skewing our perception
of what it was like to be a craftsman intrigues
me to the point where I’m beginning to
wonder if we’re not only in the process
of repeating history but also tweaking the
facts as we go. With a new generation of
power tools that are capable of powering
everything from hand drills to vacuum
cleaners my concern is that having

contributed so much to so many trades,
maybe cordless technology is heading
down the same path. Tools for tools’ sake
– discuss. By all means drop me a line

Another hot potato this month came
from a reader who asked me to explain why
it’s better to have a tight mouth on some of
his planes and how it makes a difference.
I’ve got my opinions and they’re probably
very different to those that are generally
regarded as gospel. Can anyone trace
the origins of this ‘must have’ setting or
is it another example of creative problem
solving from the past that has entered
the woodworking lexicon of fact? Tell
me what you know and why and we’ll
put this to the test later in the year.
Before you dive in to this issue I’m going
to point you in the direction of page 40 and
one of my favourite methods of construction,
knock down joinery. The pegged post and
beam is a dominant feature of timber frame
building but as Chris Gochno demonstrates,

furniture. Our gallery this month comes from
this year’s Celebration of Craftsmanship &
Design exhibition in Cheltenham. The show,
now in its 23rd year, is as popular with the
buying public as it is with people from the
trade and stands as a national barometer
for the best there is in handmade furniture.
There’s still time to make the trip if you like
what you see. For the stay-at-home furniture
maker this summer I’ve put a little extra
bite onto the classic Moxon vice with the
introduction of some houndstooth dovetails.
I’m also taking a look at a router table
accessory that not only prevents skinned
knuckles but will also improve your joints.

Entries are open for the Alumni and Studio Fellows Exhibition

C enter for Furniture Craftsmanship are calling for entries

to their Alumni and Studio Fellows Exhibition. Open to all
alumni and former Studio Fellows, the exhibition will take place
20 January–5 April, 2017 at the Messler Gallery. Judged by Mark
Gardener, Anissa Kapsales and Sarah Kay, the piece must meet
the following criteria: furniture, turning, carving and sculpture
are welcome; jurors will select work that achieves excellence in
design and fabrication; submissions must be completed works,
not drawings or models; and submitted work must not have been
previously exhibited at the Messler Gallery. All submissions must
be made electronically and should be emailed to Victoria Allport
at victoria@woodschool.org and entries must be received by
September 1, 2016.

Oakwood Veneer launches

‘Tricks of the Trade’ video contest
O akwood Veneer are encouraging
woodworkers across the world to enter
the first ever ‘Tricks of the Trade’ video
contest. Oakwood are looking for videos
featuring little-known, helpful veneer and
edge banding techniques. The grand prize
is $2,500 to spend at Oakwood, along with
two $500 runner-up and 10 $50 honourable
mention awards. All the award-winning and
notable submissions will be displayed on
Oakwood’s website and YouTube channel.
Entrants are limited to three submissions
each, with all videos a maximum of two
minutes in length. Videos need not be
professionally produced, but do need enough
visual and audio clarity to adequately teach
the presented technique. Topics must be
in relation to veneer or edge banding
installation or usage, there is no fee for
entrants. Veneer and other featured supplies
do not need to be sourced from Oakwood.
The deadline for entry is 19 August,
2016, with winners to be announced on

T his unusual table design is the work of Ronnie Payne, a former

RAF technician and police officer who is now a furniture
designer-maker. The ‘Revv-it’ table was the centrepiece of Ronnie’s
graduation portfolio from the Chippendale International School
of Furniture in East Lothian.

Combining interests
Ronnie inherited his passion for woodwork from his father who
was a joiner and, after leaving Police Scotland, he enrolled at the
Chippendale school, Scotland’s only furniture design school. He
graduated from the School in June, 2016. Ronnie’s love of motorbikes
dates back to his teens, and he now drives a Harley Davidson Softail
Deluxe, and is also an enthusiastic member of the Harley Owners
Group. So for his graduation from the School, Ronnie decided to
combine these interests. He wanted to make something quirky and
unique, which was also sturdy and absolutely functional. The Revv-It
table, complete with wooden saddle, petrol tank and handlebars, shows
how innovative design and craftsmanship can add something unique
to a home – and a piece of furniture that will also become an heirloom.
Ronnie has now set up his own business, Ripplewood Furniture,
in Falkirk. His aim is to create functional and bespoke furniture, as
well as hand-crafted kitchens and other woodwork projects. “I have
always loved wood ever since my father taught me how to use tools
as a child,” said Ronnie. “I have now been able to realise my dream
and make wonderful creations from locally sourced wood here in
the central belt of Scotland.” Ronnie riding the ‘Revv-it’ table

I
f you stay away from the basics long
enough there’s a fair chance things will
have moved on when it’s time to pay
them another visit. I’ve had a blast this
month knocking up a couple of traditional
six board chests with a meagre selection
of hand tools. Although the joinery on
these is, how can I put it, basic, there’s
plenty of scope to go wrong if the tools
in your chest aren’t up to the job. We’ll
come back to this next month in
more detail along with some advice
on choosing saws for carcass joints
but for now though here’s a look at some
equally important basics for your ‘shop.

Jet JDP-17 pillar drill

This new product from Jet is
a floor-standing pillar drill especially
designed for woodworking. As a
trade classified machine, it is
suitable for professional furniture
makers and ultra keen amateur
woodworkers in their home
workshops. Its key features include
a full 127mm of quill travel with one
turn of the handle, with an integrated
depth stop for repeat accuracy
