ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION
1. Calculate the 6th and 11th terms of a series which starts at 7 and has a common difference
of 6.
a = 7 nth term = a+(n-1) d a= 7 nth term a+(n-1) d
d = 6 6th term = 7+(6-1) 6 d= 6 11th term 7+(11-1)6
n = 6 6th term = 37 n= 11 11th term = 67

2. Calculate the 5th and 12th terms of a series which starts at 8 and has a common difference
of -7.
a= 8 nth term = a+(n-1) d a= 8 nth term = a+(n-1) d
d= -7 5th term = 8+(5-1) (-7) d= -7 12th term = 8+(12-1) (-7)
n= 5 5th term = -20 n= 12 12th term = -69

3. The first two numbers in an arithmetic progression are 6 and 4. What is the 81st term?
a=6 nth term = a+(n-1) d
d = 4-6 = -2 81th term = 6+(81-1) -2
n = 81 81st term = -154

4. All intends to start saving in July. He will set aside ₦5,000 in the first month and increase
this by ₦300 in each of the subsequent months. How much will he set aside in March?

a = 300 nth term = a+(n-1) d

d = 300 9th term = 300+(9-1) 300
n=9 9th term = 2,700
ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION – SOLVING FOR N
1. The first term is 10 and the series has a common difference of 5. How many terms
are needed to produce a sum of 325?
a = 10 s = n/2{2a + (n-1) d} 5n2 + 15n – 650 = 0 divide by 5
d=5 325 = n/2 {(2x10) + (n-1) 5 n2 + 3n -130 = 0
s = 325 650 = n {(2x10)+ (n-1) 5 n(n+13) -10(n+13) = 0
650 = 20n + 5n2 – 5n n = -13
650 = 15n + 5n2 n = 10

2. A person sets aside ₦1,000 in the first month, 1,100, in the second, 1,200 in the
third and so on. how many months will take it to save ₦9,100??
a = 1,000 nth term = a + (n-1) d 8,200 = 100n
d = 100 9,100 = 1,000 (n-1) 100 n = 8,200
an = 9,100 9,100 – 1,000 = 100n -100 100
8,100 + 100 = 100n n = 82 the 82th month is 9,100

3. A company is funding a major expansion which will take place over a period of
18 months. It will commit ₦100,000 to the project in the first month followed by
a series of monthly payments increasing by ₦10,000 per month.
a = 100,00 nth term = a + (n-1) d s = ½ n (a + l)
d = 10,000 18th term = 100,000 + (18-1) 10,000 s = ½ 18 (100,000 + 270,000)
n = 18 18th term = 100,000 + 170,000 s = ½ 18 (370,000)
18th term = 270, 000 s = 3,330,000

4. A company has spare capacity of 80,000 hours per month. (This means that it has
a workforce which could work an extra 80,000 hours if needed.)
The company has just won a new contract which requires an extra 50,000 hours in
the first month. This figure will increase by 5,000 hours per month.
The company currently has enough raw materials to service 300,000 hours of
production on the new contract. It does not currently use this material on any
other contract.
January is the first month of the contract.
In what month will the company need to hire extra labor?
In what month will the existing inventory of raw material run out?

GEOMETRIC PROGRESSION
