“Point clouds are more and more used as a starting point for your BIM-project, especially in case of
a renovation or an addition to an existing building. A point cloud offers accurate and reliable
information of your project. Working with point clouds and translate them into building elements,
however, can be a challenge. Imagine that you have to import the point cloud directly into your
BIM-software, without the possibility to filter the points you don´t need. You will end up with
millions of points in a large, non-workable file, and you will not benefit from the advantages a point
cloud offers.
Scalypso is our solution for this problem. With Allplan 2020 you get a converter that takes the point
cloud from the most commonly used file formats on the market and converts it into a Scalypso-file.
Opening that in the Scalypso Modeler, the user will be able to select points from a panoramic
picture to transfer to Allplan. These points can be used as a reference for the modeling of building
elements like walls and columns or rooms.
If you need more functionality or a more automated way of retrieving information from the point
cloud you can upgrade your “Freemium” license that comes with Allplan 2020 into a tailor-made
license of Scalypso itself. With Scalypso, Allplan offers you a user-friendly way of working with point
cloud files.

Allplan 2020
Point clouds with Scalypso
Introduction
This Step by step video focuses on the new point cloud plugin and its main functionality with the different
types of licenses available. First, you will see what is possible to do with the Freemium license and then the
Allplan modeler license.

Point clouds with Scalypso
➢ General preparation > 0:00 min to 0:45 min
This demo is detached from the ALLSITE, it can be done in a new project or the provided project with
the finished drawing files can be used. Install Scalypso through Allmenu. A 14-day trial license as well
as the Freemium license are provided. You can apply for a full license at allplan@scalypso.com.
- Open scalypso modeler through Actionbar —> Teamwork —> Scalypso Modeler
- Open the directory of the provided Test data
- Open the first file and make sure the application is connected to Allplan 2020
- Make sure you do not have a function active in Allplan as this will interfere with the handover of the
picked points

➢ Transferring points to Allplan > 1:30 min to 2:45 min
For a first impression or to check some measurements the integrated tools can be helpful
- Measure any distance in 3D or measure the delta z of two points

➢ Connecting the points > 2:45 min to 3:20 min
The transferred points can serve as basis for creating Architectural elements like walls or rooms. Here
we will use lines to create a 2D floor plan and compare it later to more intelligent functions.
- Use a 2D line to connect the terrain points with each other
- Points from all rooms could have been imported at the same time but that could have caused some
confusion
- After connecting the points switching back to Scalypso and navigating the scans to the next room via
the Scan radar
- The scans include hotspots (Scalypso symbol in the images) which can be used to navigate as well
(CTRL + double left click)
Repeating the last two steps until all necessary points are transferred and connected. The video plays
at triple speed.
One point for a room on the left is missing and therefore the floor plan looks wrong there. This could
have been avoided using the more advanced tools included in the Allplan Modeler license as shown
later in this workflow.

➢ Working with the Scalypso Modeler License > 5:20 min to 8:10 min
Enhanced functionality can increase productivity and reduce errors. This is shown in the upcoming
segment, first in normal speed and then again in triple speed for repetitive tasks.
- DF 4 in reference mode and activate DF 20 to create the rooms there
- In the video Scalypso is restarted with a full license to show the difference in the start up splash screen,
now all functions are available
- As the function we use to transfer data now is "Export Intersections of Line Segments" we need to
define two points per wall
- Scalypso will then calculate the intersections and transfer the boundaries as Allplan Rooms (shown in
the video is the option to even transfer the height of the rooms)
- To calculate intersections, the lines need to have the same heights. Scalypso points this out during the
transfer and offers to set the same height for all points manually (observe the change in the point list)
- When comparing DF 4 and DF 20 the difference between actual footprint and the first one derived
with lines can be observed

➢ Checking the floorplan with a profile > 8:10 min to 10:50 min
To ensure all ledges have been taken into account, the footprint can be checked against a profile of 3D
points. The workflow is as follows:
- Select DF 21 as active and 20 in reference mode
- Open Scalypso and select the function "Profile Generation"
- Select the Z-Dimension and keep the default settings
- Select all scans under Scan Selection and use "Export to CAD"
- The points are now being transferred to Allplan and can be checked against the generated footprint
- Differences between point cloud and the footprint are being discovered and resolved with the tool
"Fold Line" (DF 20 active and DF 21 in edit mode now)
➢ Creating walls with existing Allplan functionallity > 10:50 min to 12:57 min
The rooms are being copied to be used as a base for the creation of walls by 2D lines.
- Activate DF 22
- Paste rooms to original position, retrive the height of the rooms and convert them to 2D lines
- Activate the funtion "Walls from Lines" and enter the absolute heights in the properties dialog
- Select all lines, click in the center of a room and watch the walls being created automatically (in some
cases an error will pop up depending on the geometry)
- Open DF 20 and 21 in reference mode to check the position
