Gsm mcpa intelligent power management
Output Power HANdling In Ericsson MCPA

› Multi Carrier Power Amplifier (MCPA) is a power amplifier

used for several independent carriers/TRXs sharing the total
power at the same time.
› Benefits of MCPA
– Higher density – more carriers in one unit
– Less power consumption for larger configurations without combining
– Power trunking
– Multi standard capability
› GSM MCPA Intelligent Power Management
– Enables high capacity, high output power configurations

Full performance with real traffic

› With IPM ON and PAO ON, 60W MCPA can overbook to

80W power.

MCPA Overbooking

› MCPA Overbooking is possible because not all users want to transmit

via the MCPA at a certain time need the full configured power.

› Temporary Power Override makes it possible to overuse the MCPA

power for short periods of time.

› RF power management is a safety mechanism in the BTS to limit the

power use.

› GSM MCPA Intelligent Power Management is an optional feature in

BSS to make it possible to overbook MCPA power.

MCPA Overbooking

Using temporary power override in a 4 TRX, 60 W MCPA

reduces the need for power back-off.

FAJ 123 173, GSM MCPA Intelligent
Power Management

The single mode of operation gives possibilities for configuration

of higher output power in total for the sharing TRXs than what is
supported for the complete MCPA.

This is called power overbooking which requires the optional

Feature GSM MCPA Intelligent Power Management (FAJ 123 173).

The Intelligent Power Management functionality

provides better use of multi carrier power amplifier
hardware by permitting to exceed the maximum mean
power during short periods.

Desciption IPM
MCPA provides a pool of output
power that is shared between the RF
carriers.
MCPA provides an opportunity to TX output power [W]
“over-allocate” power in the MCPA,
by taking advantage of the statistical 80 Temporary Power Level
gain, i.e. using the fact that not all
connections need full output power at
60 Average Power Level
the same time.
 Maximizing the use of HW
40
capabilities, the feature GSM MCPA
Intelligent Power Management
ensures high capacity MCPA 20
configurations with minimum impact on
important Key Performance Indicators,
0
such as speech quality and packet
data throughput.

Gsm MCPA INTELLIGENT Power
management

› (R)RUS01 60W can be configured for 4TRX*20 W

› During short periods during “busiest hour” it may be

needed to temporarily reduce output power

› GSM MCPA Intelligent Power Management (IPM)

secures minimum impact on KPIs (speech quality,
retainability, throughput)
– If needed, power will temporarily be reduced (on a time
slot basis) according to a power back-off priority list
– PDCH power backed off first, signaling channels
protected
– HW performance and RF characteristics are guaranteed
– Statistics for monitoring MCPA power load and amount
of power back-off

RF power management
› RF power management continuously monitors the MCPA
output power usage and output power needs. Based on this the
functionality ensures that the MCPA output power do not exceed
MCPA HW capabilities.

› Performance impact for the end-users is minimized by applying power

back-off, according to pre-defined rules.

› If the sum of ordered power on all TRXs exceeds the MCPA maximum
power during a specified time the channels used for the most robust
connections (the lowest priority channels) will be backed-off.

Network Impact

› BSC/BTS HW Impact
None

› Dependencies to other BSS features

FAJ 122 910 Dynamic BTS Power Control,
FAJ 122 287 Discontinuous Transmission (DTX) Downlink are required to be
used together with GSM MCPA Intelligent Power Management.

› Dependencies to other network elements

BSS G10B with BTS G11B SW is required.

Activation Steps

Implementing the licenses is a part of the feature activation.

It is a prerequisite, the steps are listed below:

1- RBS SW loading to APGs on BSC

2- licenses loading & activation on BSC level

3- During MW: loading RBS SW G12 to RBS and

activation of the feature on RBS and cell

Parameters

› MAXPWR is a parameter set per MCTR MO to define the maximum

allowed mean power used MCPA, corresponding to a certain HW
activation code.

› MPWR is a parameter set per TX MO to limit the maximum cell power

(BSPWRB/BSPWRT) that may be used for this TX.

› PAO is a parameter set per MCTR MO to decide whether overbooking

of MCPA power shall be allowed or not.

Parameters
› IPM is a parameter set per MCTR MO to activate and deactivate the
temporary power override functionality, to better utilize the MCPA
power.
› TXMPWR is a parameter set per MCTR MO to decide with what
method the maximum TX power (MPWR) shall be set.

› MAXTRX is a parameter set per MCTR MO to define the maximum

number of TRXs possible to connect to the MCPA, corresponding to
the same amount of HW activation codes for GSM TRXs.
