TASK PERFORMANCE CASE ANALYSIS:

Maya Bay, Thailand

Introduction
Maya Bay, one of Thailand's most famous tourist destinations, would remain
closed to tourists. According to the most recent news sources, Maya Bay requires
further time to recuperate. In2018, it was closed for an indefinite length of time to
address the issue of overcrowding, which further harmed its ecosystem. The
authoriti es decided to intervene and shut it down aft er realizing that the reason of
the surge of visitors would harm the bay's coral, which had died as a result of overexposure
to tourism. However, the bay was initially closed for four months, which was then extended
after specialists recommended that the area required more time to recuperate.
Tourism is an entire system of its own, characterized as complex and dynamic,
necessitating the need for sustainability considerations. To effectively manage tourism, it is vital to
comprehend the underlying system structures and the feedback mechanisms that influence how
tourism works over time. Our main purpose is to establish the cause–effect relationship between
and among sustainable tourism variables using the tools of systems thinking. Made famous by
"The Beach," a 2000 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Maya Bay has been off-limits since June 1,
2018as part of what was expected to be a four-month rejuvenation program aimed at reviving
the area's decimated corals and installing additional boat jetties, among other activities.
1.How valuable is Maya Bay to Thailand?

-Maya Bay raked in around 400 million baht each year and making it a revenue stream
for Thailand's Tourism economy .Maya Bay is just one of dozens of idyllic beaches in
Thailand but it became famous around the world as the place where the 2000 film "The
Beach," starring Leonardo DiCaprio take place. Surrounded by high limestone cliffs on
an uninhabited island in Thailand's Phi Phi archipelago, the secluded cove with white
sand and turquoise waters is the very picture of paradise. Maya Bay ranked in around
400 million baht each year and making it a revenue stream for Thailand's Tourism
economy. And, Because of the discovery of the beauty of Maya Bay it has helped the
locals to have a livelihood here.

Maya bay, on one of the Phil phil islands in the Andaman Sea, is probably the most
famous beach in Southeast Asia. This small bay surrounded by towering limestone
cliffs, and its narrow strip of white powder sand beach, became a prime example of the
ecological damage inflicted by over tourism.
2.What kind of experience does Maya Bay provide to its visitors?

*Before Closure: Maya Bay is the main beach in Ko Phi Phi Leh and isknown as one of
the most beautiful beaches on thesurrounding islands. Not surprisingly, the beach
receivesso many visitors throughout the year. Tours to MayaBay can be by long boat or
speedboat and usually arriveat the largest beach in the island chain. The beach is
veryclean and maintained as it is a designated area of thenational park so you can
expect it to live up to itsreputation. The day tours that take you to Maya Bay,give you
ample time to enjoy the beauty of the beachand the location for various water activities
such assnorkeling, diving, and kayaking.

*During rehabilitation: Maya Bay closes to tourism. After suffering severe damage at
thehands of excessive tourism, this famous coast has been given thenecessary period
of time to recover. Studies by marine biologistsshow exactly what was damaged.
Because large chunks of coralreefs have disappeared and marine life is only a fraction
of what itonce was, it may take years for marine life to return as rich asbefore. There is
no current reopening date set in stone. Andbecause Maya Bay receives so many
visitors and boats every day,the tourist waste it leaves behind has accumulated to be
too muchfor the fragile marine life that inhabits this beautiful area ofThailand.
3.Describe the level of visitors use in Maya Bay.
*Before Closure: Because of Maya Bays popularity, the data released by the DNP said
that the level of visitor might possibly reach 2.5 million tourists in2018. Before its
closure, it is said that the famous beach receives as many as 4,000 tourists. But not just
that, they also encounter 200 boats a day which is obviously a lot of people for the
beach to accommodate. Having this lot of tourists can surely ruin the cleanliness and
preservation of the spot. The overwhelming percent of the tourist became the reason for
the beach to be closed for rehabilitation.

*During rehabilitation: During the rehabilitation of Maya Bay, the tourists number
decreased. It was closed for four (4) months due to the effects of the high influx of
tourist that reached by half a million. After the initial phase of its closure, the DND
(Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation) of Thailand, said that
Maya Bay need more time to recover and the closure was extended until October. Aside
from that they planned to promote ane-ticket system and implemented that boats are
no longer allowed to cross the shallow reef to limit the tourists number. From4,000
tourists before it will be 2,000 or less tourist now.

4. Describe the impact of the utilization of visitors on Maya Bay’s natural

resources.
A survey conducted by the DNP suggested that the coral reef flats in certain parts of the
bay have degraded and seriously damaged, and broken coral fragments are also visible
on the seafloor. Tourist boats and their anchors are said to be one of the major reasons
for the degradation and destruction. And it was also reported some tourist littered the
area with trash around the bay. The trash and destruction left by the tourist was the
reason why the closed the resort so they can have a time to fix every problem. They
need to rehabilitate the Maya Bay so that they can fix and prepare it when they reopen
the spot.

5. explain the current condition of the island and provide comments or

suggestion on how to make better.
Maya Bay, on the island of Phi Phi Leh, was temporarily closed last year after officials
said a sharp rise in visitors had severely damaged the environment. Sumsawang said
that they will review again then it is ready to open to tourists. They need more time to
allow nature to fully recover. Their team will reassess the situation every three months.
We suggest that the government and the local should accommodate limited tourists that
is surely the Maya Bay can handle. The government of Thailand should implement more
rules and regulation in order topreserve the eco-marine, the beauty and cleanliness of
Maya Bay.
