Draw the structural system using AutoCad

Command Action
Line ↵ draw a line
0,0 ↵ Specify first point coordinate of the line
0,8 ↵ 0,2 ↵ 10,1 ↵ Specify next point coordinate of the line measured from the previous point
coordinate, difference equal 0 in X-direction and 8 in Y-direction, …………..
↵ Click (Enter) to finish the line command
Zoom ↵ All ↵ Zooming the view in different situation, zooming on all the drawn elements
Line ↵ draw a line
“Click (shift + right button) or (Ctrl + right button), then select Specify the first point of the line from the screen at the crane level
End-Point from the Object-Snap, then click the first point”
@0.6,0 ↵ ↵ Specify next point that the difference equal 0.6 in X-direction and 0 in Y-
direction, then click (Enter) to finish the line command
Copy ↵ Copy an object
“Select the long vertical line” ↵ Select the objects which will be copied
“Select upper point of the vertical line, then select the upper Select the base point which will the new objects copied from, then select the
point of the rafter” ↵ second point which will the new objects copied to
Offset ↵ 1.5 ↵ Copy a new object parallel to the old one at distance 1.5
“Select the copied line, then click on the left side” ↵ Select the objects which will be copied, then the side where the new object
will offset to
Offset ↵ 7.5 ↵ “Select line, click on left side” ↵ Repeat the last action at different distance
Trim ↵ Cut a part of a line
“Select the offset two lines intersecting with the rafter” ↵ Select the two lines surrounding the line part which will be cut
“Select the rafter between the selecting two lines” ↵ Select the part which will be cut
Line ↵ draw a new line instead of the erased one
Erase ↵ Remove or Delete an object
“Select the three unneeded vertical lines” ↵ Select the objects which will be deleted
Mirror ↵ Copy a new object mirror to the old one
“Select the column and the rafter” ↵ Select the objects which will be copied
“Select End-Point of the rafter at the middle of the frame” Select the first point of the mirror line which the new objects copied around
“Click (F8) to activate the Ortho-Mode, then select any other Select the second point of the mirror line to make it vertical line exactly
point on the vertical direction”
View the structural system
in 3-D view
Rotate the
structural
system to
be vertical
(xz plane)
Create new layer
Select all
objects in
the drawing
to be in the
new layer
Check the
unit used
in the
drawing
Save the file in DXF format
MODEL THE
STRUCTURAL
SYSTEM IN SAP
Create new model
Import the structural system
from the AutoCad file
Chose the direction and the units to
be compatible with the AutoCad file
View the drawing to be
in 2-D or 3-D
Check that columns and beams
are connected each other
Merge the duplicated joints at
same coordinates
Save the problem in special directory
because each problem creates more than
30 files
DEFINE CROSS
SECTIONS AND
BOUNDARY
CONDITIONS
Notice
the units
Define the steel properties
Define steel cross-sections
Notice
the units
Define built-up I-section (flange 200x16 & web 400x8)
Define steel cross-sections
Define tapered built-up I-section
(flange 200x16 & web 600/400x8)
View the local axes of
the frame elements
Reverse
local axes
of the
selected
elements
Assign the cross-
sections of the
frame elements
Check the cross-section
of the frame elements
Increase the font size to
be readable
Check the cross-section
of the frame elements
Assign the restraints of
the hinged bases
Assign intermediate
hinges of simple beams
DEFINE DIFFERENT
CASES OF LOADING
Define types of main loads
Assign the distributed loads
(vertical)
Assign distributed loads
(perpendicular to elements)
Assign concentrated loads
Display
the
loads
Create cases of loading
Create max. max. cases
of loading
Run analysis in 2-D degrees of freedom (XZ-plane)
Choose the load cases to be solved
