Impact of Workplace Environment on Employee Performance

With an increase in modernization, the businesses are unraveling various challenges because of

the evolving working environment. One of the major obstacles for business is to serve the

requirements of its employees in order to make up with the evolving market conditions and to

sustain in the competitive market. Employees are an important tool in achieving the mission and

vision of the organization. To boost employees' confidence, effectiveness, performance, and job

devotion, the company must meet their demands by offering an ideal working environment

(Grant & Connor, 2019). Employees devote their valuable time doing their jobs more than

spending it with their spouse or family members. As such, it is significant to provide employees

with their favorable environment. The major aspects of a positive working environment are

organizational climate, strong communication, healthy relationships among the employees which

influences the cognitive and emotional states, actions, behavior, concentration and abilities of the

employees(Leonard, 2019).

The environment of the workplace influences employee’s morale, engagement and productivity-

both positively and negatively. The absence of personal protective equipment, poorly designed

workstations, inadequate lighting, poor ventilation, inappropriate furniture, and excessive noise

are just a few of the factors that contribute to a dangerous and unpleasant work environment in
many different sectors (satyendra, 2019). People who work in such an atmosphere are at risk of

occupational sickness, which has a negative influence on employee performance. Thus, the

office atmosphere has a detrimental impact on productivity.

To achieve the goal, managers in any firm can recognise the elements of the workplace and

employee psychology that best inspire employees and ensure that these elements are provided to

increase productivity. The three primary elements that make up the work environment are the

technology environment, the human environment, and the organizational environment (Grant &

Connor, 2019). The technological environment consists of tangible or technical elements such as

equipment, technology infrastructure, and other tools. The factors created by this environment

allow personnel to carry out their particular duties and tasks. The term "human environment"

refers to coworkers, clients, team members, workplace interactions, management, leadership, and

human surroundings (Rasiq & Maulabakhsh, 2014). An organization's environment is made up

of its systems, procedures, practices, attitudes, and ideologies. For instance, if the measurement

system promotes quantity rather than quality, employees won't be as motivated to help those who

are trying to improve quality. The workplace atmosphere has an impact on employees'

productivity.

The major segments of the work environment are work and context. Work consists of all the

distinct aspects like the process of carrying out the job, involvement of training and development

programs, autonomy in completing tasks, and sense of accomplishment from the task. Whereas,

the second segment context takes into account psychological factors like organizational values

and culture, relations between management and employees (satyendra, 2019). The
communication between the top level of management with working staff plays a decisive role in

flourishing the working environment. There are some significant potential connections between

effective leadership and a good constructed environment. A favorable constructed working

environment enhances both high performance and employee well-being because it encourages

sustainable high performance. (satyendra, 2019) It is rather predictable that an emphasis solely

on high performance without taking into account components of well-being results in employee

dissatisfaction and stress.

It is often seen that employers restrict their employees to a specific given task rather than

allowing them to take up the responsibilities. This limits the employees from sharing ideas and

opinions with the superiors and hampers the performance of the organization. The research

conducted by Chandrasekhar (CHANDRASEKAR, 2011, 10)stated that in order to boost

employees productivity and raise an organization's revenues, it is crucial to build a work

environment that supports the ability of its workers. He further asserted that in the modern

period, management skills, time, and energy are all necessary for enhancing the overall

performance of the business, however human to human connections and relationships are playing

a more dominant role in total employee’s performance. Moreover, the higher involvement of

employees in the organization makes the employees more productive and decreases the turnover

rate (CHANDRASEKAR, 2011, 12)

The design of the workplace has a big impact on how well employees perform. The organization

should build an environment where employees should get their private space, relief, satisfaction

of work, and should feel safe. The quality of an employee's office environment has the greatest
influence on their level of motivation and their overall performance. Their rate of mistakes, level

of innovation and collaboration with other employees, tardiness, and ultimately how long they

stay on the job are all significantly influenced by how well they connect with the business,

particularly with their immediate surroundings.
