REFLECTIVE ESSAY

By: Hanan Kiram Ramos

While reading the powerpoint that was all about Athletics, I learned that Athletics is the

new term of track and field. It consists of the track and field events, road running, road walking,

cross-country running and mountain running. In fact, I love these activities because on the

definitive list of amazing exercise activities, running ranks pretty highly — the practical benefits

include convenience and affordability, but from a health standpoint, it’s an effective way to keep

both your body and brain in great shape. “Running is one of the simplest cardiovascular activities

you can do, with benefits for nearly every part of your body,” says Meghan Kennihan, NASM-

CPT, a Road Runners Club of America and USA Triathlon run coach. Furthermore, having

knowledge in Athletics is wholesome. The history behind the word running is mesmerizing. Who

would have thought that running is the origin of track (and field) that arose from man’s natural

competitive urges; running races is as old as man himself, the ancient Greeks, Persians, and

Romans used running as part of their military training, and many significant more.

Before starting running, you must have to prepare the things necessary for running. It is

important to have these equipment and facilities to secure your health and to avert troubles. These

are the equipments and facilities needed before running:

● Starting Blocks - are a device used in sports of track and field by sprint athletes to hold

their feet at the start of a race so they don’t slip as they push out at the sound of the gun
● Spikes Shoe - are pointed protrusions usually made of metal, ceramic or plastic that are

screwed into the bottom of most track and field shoes to increase traction and minimize the

likelihood of slipping.

● Baton - the relay baton shall be a smooth hollow tube, a circular section, made in wood,

metal or any other rigid material in one piece, the length of which shall be 280-300 mm.

● Track Hurdles - The hurdles shall be made of metal or some other suitable material with

the top bar of wood or the other suitable material. They shall consist of two feet and two

uprights to be fixed at the extreme end of its base.

● Discus Discs - Discus disc is an equipment in discus throw weighing 2kg for men, 1kg for

women, that is 22cm in diameter for men, and 18cm for women.

● Shot is a heavy spherical object used in adult men’s shot put competition and weighs 16

pounds, or 7.26 kilograms, while the shot used in women’s competition typically weighs

8.8 pounds, or four kilograms.

● Javelin - A metal or metal-tipped spear thrown for distance in track and field competitions.

● Hammer Iron - A heavy steel ball attached with a long wire (maximum length 122cm) to a

handle weighing 16lb/7.26kg for men, 4kg for women.

In running, there’s no competition, just do your own thing, know your place, aim fluids

carefully, watch your steps, just run, and be you.
