 Patient and family centered care (PFCC) acts as a partnership between healthcare
professionals, patients, and families to combat the needs for care, decision-making, and
information sharing for certain individuals affected by Autism.
 PFCC is a step that should be implemented for all children with disorders, not just
children on the Autism Spectrum (ASD).
 Studies show that children with Autism are likely to experience negative encounters and
bad experiences in the medical workplace despite the increasing awareness brought to the
disorder.
 This article showed a study in which 40 families were analyzed (each family containing a
child with Autism) and using a mixed-method approach of PFCC, the benefits of the
treatment and therapy were analyzed.
 The main focus of this article was to evaluate the benefits and weaknesses of PFCC and
how it can benefit families taking care of children with ASD.
 Doctors have hopes that PFCC when implemented in healthcare settings will improve
healthcare interactions and inform solution-based treatments to all patients, not limited to
children with autism.
 One of the most important steps to PFCC (and many other health related processes) is the
collaboration with healthcare professionals, patients, and families to generate a
personalized evaluation of the child in need and treatments available.
 In the long term, PFCC may help decrease maladaptive behaviors such as a child crying,
restlessness, improved confidence in daily life, and the requirement of pain medication in
children. PFCC will help teach a child to handle their stressors as they learn to manage
their emotional distress through coping and personalized treatments.
 ASD is a fast-growing developmental condition in the United States, with 1 in 54
children being diagnosed.
 Children with ASD are more likely to utilize all healthcare services, including psychiatry
or psychology services and visits, therefore children with ASD are more likely to benefit
greatly from PFCC programs.
 The data measured in this article was developed to gather the perspectives of families on
the medical services in relation to their child with ASD, and how PFCC benefited them.

This source included a study on children with autism spectrum disorder in relation to the way
they can face treatment and Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC). This article is very
important to understanding the way children respond to healthcare environments and healthcare
professionals. Children with ASD especially are likely to have a bad reaction to the medical
environment, so the article suggests several ways of how PFCC can be implemented to reduce
the bad experiences.
