As the name suggests, Biosensors are analytical device that measures biological or
chemical reactions by generating signals proportional to the concentration of an
analyte in the reaction.

Biosensors have many applications in areas of biomedical research, drug

analysis, environmental monitoring and food safety, because of their advantages of
selectivity, sensitivity, speed of analysis and low cost,

In recent years, the development of nanotechnology has provided more excellent functional
nanomaterials for electrochemical sensors and biosensors, which obtaining upgraded
physical, chemical, and biological properties. Advanced functionalized nanomaterials based
electro-analytical strategies are highly sensitive and selective with rapid response tools, which
are highly essential in the field of biomedical and certainly in many areas of analytical
sciences.

Introduction of novel functional nanomaterials and analytical technologies signify a
foremost possibility for the advance of electrochemical sensor and biosensor devices
for a broad series of applications like biomedical, biotechnological, clinical,
environmental and health monitoring

Our presentation will focusing on ZnO-based nanostructured biosensors and

improved biological activity of nanomaterial-based biosensors.

4.Frontier Application
1. 药物检测与分析 Drug detection & analyses
Electrochemical sensors and biosensors are interesting candidates for the detection
and quantification of drugs, because of their high sensitivity, low cost, and the speed
at which they are carried out.
Nanomaterials have often been used in the modification of bare electrodes in
electrochemical analysis. Novel electrochemical sensors based on nanomaterials
have gained special attention, due to their low cost and high sensitivity. In the
nanometer range, the surface area of materials greatly increase, resulting in new
phenomena, such as improvement in electrical conductivity, which make
nanostructure biosensors become the best choice in drug detection.

Fig. shows the general scheme of operation of an electrochemical sensor for drug analyse. In this
figure, the different ways of applying electric potential, as well as current response models
obtained by different voltammetry techniques, The active layer is designed to interact with the
analyte of interest, and produces a measurable signal once bound.

2. 生物成分检测 Biochemical testing

Nanobased biosensing technology not only provides a novel and rapid method for
basic medical research and clinical pharmacological diagnosis, but also has a wide
range of applications in the detection of biological components because of its
specificity, sensitivity and fast response.

The immobilization of biomolecules on the nanostructure to be used as a platform

for biosensors is mainly dependent on the shape, size, and properties of the
nanostructure. Advances in the field of ZnO crystal growth have allowed the
synthesis of about 10-types of ZnO NSMs, which enables ZnO nanoparticles
successful immobilize different types of biomolecules on their surfaces.

Nanostructures such as nanowires, nanorods, nanoparticles, quantum dots..have

been extensively reported in bio-sensing applications. In addition, the analyte most
commonly used as a detecting material can be classified as: molecules having a lower
molecular weight: dopamine, uric acid, urea, and riboflavin; proteins: BSA, HAS,
immunoglobulin, streptavidin; Nucleic acid: RNA and DNA; cells: cancer cells,
infectious cells, bacteria, and viruses.

3. 环境检测 Environmental Monitoring

Environmental monitoring has always been one of the main application fields of
biosensors because they are capable of detection of the analytes in complex matrices
with high sensitivity, specificity, in relatively short time and at relatively low cost.

5.Summary:
Introduction of novel functional nanomaterials and analytical technologies like ZnO nanomaterial
based biosensor have the advantages of Low-cost, portable, energy efficient, easy fabrication, and
simultaneous sensing performance, which signified a foremost opportunity for the development of
electrochemical sensor and biosensor platforms.

High light points:

1) Adapting more biosensors through controlled synthesis of nanomaterials in terms of size and
shape
2) Optimizing nanomaterials with exceptional properties to establish enhanced sensitivity and
selectivity
3) The ease of functionalization of nanomaterials offering high selectivity to the sensor

Outlook:
through literature reading, we found that there are still a series of problems that need further
improvement and research, such as insufficient sensitivity of the sensor and the specificity of the
sensing process for the corresponding chemical substances. Further advances in novel synthetic
approaches of functional nanomaterials and analytical sensing strategies will certainly inspire the
development of novel biosensors towards biomedical & biochemical applications.

We believe that with the progress of scientific research, there will be more efficient, sensitive and
convenient biosensors in the fields of drug treatment, health monitoring and other fields in the
future, according to the characteristics of various treatment drugs and biomolecules.
