1 Determining your rack type 3 Installing the clip nuts
You will need a #2 and #3 Phillips screwdriver, the two
rack rails, and the packet of M6 screws and clip nuts 1U markers
appropriate for your rack.
• The HP System/E rack has 7.1 mm round holes in
the rack column. Choose the packet labeled HP Rack
System/E.
• The HP 5000 and 10000 racks have 9.5 mm square Clip nut location
holes in the rack column. Choose the packet labeled
HP Rack 5000, 10000.

screwdriver, secure the front and back of each rail to
the rack. The front of each rail is straight and the back
is angled, as shown.

Slide the Library onto the rails. Secure the front bezel to
the rack using a #2 Phillips screwdriver placed through
the small holes in the mounting bracket to tighten the
captive screws on each side of the Library.
Optional: Adding a redundant Optional: Adding tape drives
power supply

With the tape drive upgrade kits, the Tape Library can
hold up to four tape drives.

With the redundant power supply upgrade kit, the Tape

Library will continue to operate without interruption if
either power supply fails.
To install the redundant power supply, remove the cover
plate for the redundant power supply, slide the power
supply into the bay until it is firmly seated, and then
secure it by tightening the blue thumb screws.

Locate the next higher tape drive bay, which will be

directly above a full-height drive or above a half-height
drive/half-height cover pair, in one of the locations
shown.
Remove one cover for a half-height drive or two covers
for a full-height drive.

Slide the tape drive into the bay until it is firmly seated,
and then secure it by tightening the blue thumb screws.
5a Planning the parallel SCSI 5c Planning the Fiber Channel
configuration: parallel SCSI configuration: Fiber Channel
If you are unfamiliar with configuring parallel SCSI
devices, read the parallel SCSI configuration
information in the User and Service Guide on the
documentation CD.
Follow these general guidelines when planning the
parallel SCSI configuration:
You must provide a Fibre Channel cable for each tape

5b Planning the SAS

configuration (SAS only)
6 Preparing the host
If necessary, install software, a host bus adapter (HBA),
and compatible drivers in the host computer.
Ensure that your HBA supports multiple LUNs. For
parallel SCSI devices, verify that multiple LUN support is
enabled for the HBA and operating system.
The server must have a SAS HBA with an external HP recommends that the host server be powered down

multiple LUNs, which are needed to communicate with
the Library robotic.

WARNING! Do not connect the Library to a SAS

RAID controller unless the EBS compatibility
matrix shows that the controller is qualified with
the Library. The server might not be able to boot
when the Library is connected to a non-
supported SAS RAID controller. Check the EBS
matrix at http://www.hp.com/go/ebs to find a
SAS HBA that is supported on your server and
qualified with the Library.
7 Changing the SCSI ID 8b Connecting the Library:
If you need to change the SCSI ID for any of the tape Fibre Channel
drives, do so before connecting the Library to the host
computer.
1. Attach the power cord to the Library.

Remove the FC port cap from Port A on one of the tape

drives. Attach one end of the FC cable to Port A on the
tape drive. Attach the other end of the FC cable to a
switch or HBA. Repeat for each tape drive.
2. Power on the Library from the front panel.

9 Powering on the Library 11 Setting the date and time
This option sets the date and time used by the Library to
record events and should be set during the initial
installation process.

12 Configuring the networking

Configuring the networking enables you to monitor,
configure, and control most Library functions from the
RMI. By default, the Library will obtain an IP address
from a DHCP server. You can configure the Library to
use a static IP address. Once the Library has an IP
address, you can change the network configuration
from the OCP or RMI.

Setting an administrator password provides access to To see the IP address obtained from a DHCP server, go

interface (RMI), and restricts access to administrator address, go to the Configuration > Network option.
functions from people who do not know the password.
Passwords must be exactly eight digits consisting of the
numbers 0 through 9.

changing the Fibre Channel configuration.
14 Labeling tape cartridges 15 Loading the tape cartridges
Use the OCP Operations > Unlock Left Magazines
option to release the left magazines. Pull all of the left
magazines out about 2 cm (1 in) to clear the lock, and
then pull each magazine out individually.

Having a bar code label on each tape cartridge

enables the Library to identify the cartridge quickly and
accurately, which speeds up inventory time.
Apply the bar code label to the recessed area on the
face of the cartridge, next to the write-protect switch.

The lower left magazine, which is designated by a

white dot on the lower right corner, has a 3-slot mailslot
in the front of the magazine. Leave these slots empty if
you plan to configure these slots as mailslots.

Only apply labels as designated.

IMPORTANT! The misuse and misunderstanding of bar

code technology can result in backup and restore failures.
To ensure that your bar codes meet HP's quality
standards, always purchase them from an approved
supplier and never print bar code labels yourself. For
more information, refer to the Bar Code Label
Requirements, Compatibility and Usage white paper
available from http://www.hp.com/support.

Replace the magazines in the Library.

Repeat for the right magazines.
The upper right magazine can also be configured as a
mailslot. Leave this magazine empty if you plan to use it
as a mailslot.

16 Verifying the installation Using the operator control panel
(OCP)
1. Use the HP StorageWorks Library & Tape Tools
