Set to the tune of Basil Valdez’s "You" (as sung
by a child), Google Philippines shows snippets of
Filipino families separated by circumstances,
but connected through technology. The vision
of the mission? "Share the everyday no matter
the distance." The touching video is only one
part of Google’s Balikbayan campaign, a page
that encourages Overseas Filipino Workers and
their families to utilize Google+ features like
Circles and Hangouts to stay in touch. It’s a nice
reminder that maybe that person on your social
media feed is simply trying to connect to friends
and relatives in lands far, far away. (Or that
emojis and stickers aren’t subtitutes for real
hugs and smileys, but sometimes it’s all other
people have. Is it raining on your face yet?)
According to the Blas F. Ople Policy Center and
Training Institute, “There is no let-up in the
number of Filipino women leaving to work
abroad as domestic workers. Based on the
records of the Philippine Overseas Employment
Administration (POEA), the deployment of
Filipino domestic workers abroad is increasing
year-to-year. For the first time, newly hired
household service workers (HSWs) breached
the 100,000-mark. (136,000 deployed in 2011)

- Means that you are overqualified for
your job, and it does not match your

Literary Theories
Three types of irony found in literature;
1. Verbal Irony- when something that is
said actually means the opposite. It is
employed when people are sarcastic
toward one another or are involved in
wordplay.
2. Situational Irony- when what we expect
to happen turns out to be the opposite.
3. Dramatic Irony- when the character,
usually the protagonist, is mistaken,
mislead or confused about what
happened, while the audience (or
reader) has full knowledge of it.

Escapist Comparisons
- Compare and contrast the escapism you
feel when you read a good comic book,
poem, short story, or novel with the
escapism you feel when you play a
video game.
Science fiction
- The importance of science fiction is that
its escapist nature and exotic setting
often allow the reader to delve deeply
into the societal problems of the world,
which, eventually, leads to him/her
realizing that what he/she is seeing is
connected to the societal problems of
this world.
Background knowledge:
o Today’s ideas about cyberspace were
first conceived by William Gibson, who
described how gamers would play in a
1980s arcade. (Elmer-DeWitt 1996)
o Today, we have personal computer (PC)
games, PlayStation Portable PSPs), and
a wide range of games owing their
existence to the humble videogames of
old, such as Pac-Man and Super Mario
Bros.
o New Society- According to Philippine
History.org, martial law was necessary
in order to create an idealized country,
called “New society.”
o Cultural Center of the Philippines
(CCP)- The CCP was the pet project of
the First Lady Imelda Marcos, created
to preserve the arts and culture of the
country.
o Escape to mountains- This phrase
would mean “to go underground” or
join the New people’s army to rebel
against the Marcos government.

oversimplified image or idea of a

"the stereotype of the woman as the

Foil
■ is a character that seems to highlight
the distinct features of the protagonist.
■ Harry Potter’s rival Draco Malfoy makes
an excellent foil example in the Harry
Potter series. Professor Snape allows
both boys to experience the essential
adventures of self determination. But
while Harry chooses to fight Lord
Valdemort and the Death eaters, Draco
Malfoy instead joins them.
■ As we see Malfoy teaming up
Valdemort and his band of nasties, it
helps to highlight the positive choices
that Harry Potter makes as he struggles
against the dark wizard. Like foil,
Malfoy helps Potter to shine.
Alternative Ending

Argument is composed of three elements:

1. Assertion- an opinion that can be right

or wrong.

2. Evidence- facts that help in proving

your assertion.
