TASK PERFORMANCE

I. Polya’s Strategy
Use Polya’s four-step problem-solving strategy to solve the following problems. (3 items x 10 points)
1. How many different rectangles with an area of one-hundred twenty (120) square units can be formed
using unit squares?
 Understand the Problem:
There are different rectangles with an area of 120 square units. If 12 is the length and 10
is the width if we multiply it, we will get the area of 120. Now what we need to do is find
rectangles that when we multiply the length and width the area will be 120.
 Devise a Plan:
We need to find and make rectangles that have an area of 120. List all the factors that will
equal to 120. The formula we will be using is “x” multiplied by “x” is 120.
 Carry out the Plan:
Start with 1 x 120 and only use whole numbers as an option.
1 × 120
2 × 60
3 × 40
4 × 30
5 × 24
6 × 20
8 × 15
10 × 12
All the opposites are the same rectangle turned 90 degrees. This brings us to a total
of 8, for a total of 16.
 Review the Solution:
By multiplying two numbers that may have the product of 120. We were able to get the
number of rectangles that have 120 square units. No numbers higher than what we have
can be multiplied and be equal to 120. Total number of possible rectangles = 8 + 8 = 16
Rectangles.
2. Suppose thirty-six (36) students signed up for classes during an orientation session. If exactly twenty-
two (22) of them signed up for Chemistry and exactly eighteen (18) of them signed up for English, how
many of them signed up for both Chemistry and English? How many of them signed up for Chemistry
only? How many of them signed up for English only?
 Understand the Problem:
The problem is asking how many students signed up for chemistry and English only, and
how many signed up for both subjects.
 Devise a Plan:
We can do some subtraction from 36, since there is 22, we can subtract 22 from 36 and
the answer is the total no. Of student who signed up for chemistry. The same as in the first
step we can subtract 18 from 36 and the answer will be the total no. Of student who signed
up for English. Lastly, we can add the total no. Of students who signed up for both subject
and subtract the answer to 36 and the difference will the total no. Of students who signed
 Carry out the Plan:
36 − 22 = 14
36 − 18 = 18
14 + 18 = 32
36 – 32 = 4
 Review the Solution:
To review the solution 18 + 14 + 4= 36 students
There are 14 students signed up for chemistry.
There are 18 students signed up for English.
There are 4 students signed up for both subjects.

3. An online mobile game tournament was facilitated and begins with 1024 players. Each game has four
(4) players, and in each game, only one (1) winner will advance to the next round. How many games
must be played to determine the winner?
 Understand the problem:
1024 players will compete, 4 players will play against each other and one of them will
advance to the next round. Now we need to determine the number of games that need to
be played to have a winner.
 Devise a Plan:
Since there are 1024 players in every game, there are 4 players and 1 can be the winner.
We can divide 1024 by 4 for game 1. The players of second round will also be divides
same as the other rounds until we get the answer 1.
 Carry out the plan:
1024
1𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟: = 256 𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔
4
256
2𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛 𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢: = 64 𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔

5𝑡𝑡ℎ 𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟: = 1 𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔
4
256 + 64 + 16 + 4 + 1 = 341 𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔
 Review the solution:
By dividing and adding the quotients we were able to get the number of games that was
needed to determine the winner. There are 5 rounds and 341 games to be played in
order to find 1 winner in the end of the tournament.

II. KenKen
KenKen is an arithmetic and logic puzzle that can improve our calculation skills, logical thinking, and
persistence. The rule of this puzzle is very simple. It consists of an equal number of rows and columns. The
player can input any digit in every square. The lowest input is a 1 and the highest input is equal to the
number of rows or columns. The input must not repeat in the same row and same column. The puzzle
consists of a heavy-outlined area called “cages”. The top left corner of each cage has a “target number”
and a mathematical operation. The numbers or inputs in each cage must combine to produce the target
number using the mathematical operation (+, −, ×, ÷). The puzzle can have a cage with one square, it is
called a “freebie”. This puzzle can have three (3) or a greater number of columns and rows. An example of
3x3 and 5x5 Kenken puzzles are shown below.
3x3 3+
3+ 6× 3÷ 6× 3÷
1 2 3
2 3 1
2- 2 2- 2
3 1 2

5x5

Your task is to create your own Kenken puzzle. The number of columns and rows should not be less
than 5. Explain your puzzle and present its solution using the method or strategy you have learned in
this module. (20 points)
3x3

 To start with, look for the cage with one square called “freebie”.
 Put “1” in the column 1 in the last row since that is the “freebie”. Also, in the column 3 in the
first row.
 Now we have “3” and “2” in the column 3. Which we can complete the “8+” and add “3” to
have the sum of 8.
 Lastly, we can put “2,1” in the column 2 by elimination and the remaining possible answer for
“12x” which is “3,2”.

5x5

 The best place to start is a square called “freebie” with only 1 number which is “4”.
 Next is the rectangle with only possible solution. “20x” is one such rectangle. The only solution
is 4,5 (or 5,4). That gives information about column 1.
 In the last row “1- “have possible answers (1,2). The 2 other cells of the column 1 must be “2”
and “3” by elimination.
 Now we have “2” and “4” in the column 2. Which we can complete the “13+” for the remaining
cells it must be “3” and “5”.
 Simply put “1” by elimination in “6+” to proceed in the next column. Then put “5” to “6+” to
make it equals to 6.
 Let us look at “1- “on the first row which have only possible answer here is “2,3”.
 Consider the “2÷” that makes the possible answer is “2,4”.
 Therefore, the answers for “11+” is “1,5”. We can simply put “1,4” to the column 4. This can
fill the remaining square which is “3” and “5”.
 Now on the column 3, both “9+” we may fill the gaps by elimination to complete the whole
puzzle.
