Data-Collection Patterns

In the research studies I have chosen, there seems to be a pattern of utilizing interviews and

statistics with regard to criminal justice and sexual assault specifically. For criminal justice, there

appears to be many research studies that utilize qualitative data over other methods. This may be

because sexual assault is such an uncomfortable topic for many and so it’s easier to gather the

data through qualitative means rather than quantitative. In other social sciences, it appears that

mixed-method is used more because you can gather more information using different methods to

make answering the research question easier and allows for a more concrete answer. If a

researcher is using qualitative research more than quantitative or mixed-method or vice versa,

this can make it hard for people to justify the research with the lack of different research methods

and therefore additional information that can either help confirm or deny the results of the study.

This can cause those that are looking at the research specifically to believe that the researcher is

biased, and the research is not creditable.

Varied Data-Collection Purpose:

When multiple data-collection types are used, it increases the information that you have to come

to a more concrete conclusion. Additionally, if multiple data-collection types are used, it makes

the research more creditable as the research came from multiple sources using multiple methods.

Although having multiple data-collection types can lead to more research creditability, it is not

without drawbacks. Having multiple data-collection types means more hours researching and

most likely more funding needed to conduct the research. However, when you have more varied

data collection, the credibility risks go down. Some common types of data collection in social

science research include “closed-ended surveys and online quizzes; open-ended surveys and

questionnaires; 1-on-1 interviews; focus groups; and finally, direct observation (Jovancic,

2020).” I think some social sciences seem to favor particular types of data-collection over others

because depending on what they are researching, it may be easier to utilize a specific type of

data-collection that they have experience with and that they know will get them the results they

want.
