COURSE NAME INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING PLANT DESIGN

Assessment : Group Project – Chemical Selection and Site Selection

CLO : 3
MQF LOD : 9
Domain : A3
Assessment marks : 20%
Task : 1. Identify and select the best process to produce the desired chemical.
2. Identify and select the most suitable site to build up the chemical plant.

Learning outcome

1. Identify the selected process for the chosen process plant.

2. Understand the reasoning of determining the suitable site to build the chosen chemical plant
Objectives

In a group of maximum four students, the lecturer will provide a given chemical to produce, example
such as Benzene or Propylene. The group is required to identify the best process to produce the
selected chemical product by analyzing the methods commonly used by the industries. Upon
completion the process selection, student need to produce PFD for the selected process.

Furthermore, based on the selected process, the student also required to identify the best site to build
the chemical plant. Using at least four (4) site selection factors such as raw materials availability,
market accessibility, labour supply and others, students are required to justify their decision.

Upon completion, students are tasked to present to the lecturer their chemical and site selection
outcome.

Assessment
The presentation slides should include.

1. Introduction – briefly explain the history, physical properties, and common application of the
selected chemical.

2. Process background and selection – describe the various method used to produce the
chemical and provide justification for the method chosen. Include the process flow diagram (PFD) of
the chosen process.

3. Plant location and justification – propose the site location by providing the address and
satellite image of the location. Put additional images that seem relevant to better portray the future
plant site. Emphasis at least four (4) aspects that being used to determine the proposed site location.

4. Layout and size of the plant. Do the research on the common layout of that chemical plant. It
must be relevant to the chosen chemical.

5. Conclusion – summary of the suitability of the chosen process and site selection to
accommodate with the required task.
