I. Topic: News Lead

II. Objectives:
At the end of the period, students must be able to:
a. Define news lead
b. Enumerate the 5 conventional leads
c. Identify the type of lead used in selected news stories

II. A. Pre-Discussion/ Initial Task


Motivation
a. The teacher will select students to give a short report on the news stories shown
on the news last night.

During Discussion
The teacher will explain the following:
NEWS LEAD – answers what the news story is about; it is found at the beginning of the news
story.

The main functions of the lead, aside from introducing the news story, are to tell the story in
capsule form and to answer right away the questions the reader would naturally ask. A good
lead answers all the important question of the reader.

Types of Lead
1. Conventional/Summary Lead
a. Who lead – used when the person involved is more prominent than what he does or what
happened to him
b. What lead – used when the event or what took place is more important than the person
involved in the story
c. Where lead – used when the place is unique and no prominent people is involved
d. When lead – rarely used; however, this lead is useful when speaking of deadlines, holidays, or
important dates
e. Why lead – used when the reason is more prominent or unique than what happens
f. How lead – used when the manner, means, or mode of achieving the story is the unnatural
way

Post-Discussion/Evaluation
I. Directions: Identify the conventional lead used in the following leads.

1. On Saturday, April 30, the moon will pass directly in front of the sun causing a total eclipse for
half an hour.
2. To raise funds for the construction of five more classrooms, the Parent-Teacher Association will
sponsor a beauty contest Saturday night at the school social hall.
3. Sen. Alberto Romulo today appealed for the immediate concurrence by the Lower House of a
Senate-approved bill to repeal all automatic appropriations for foreign debt payment.
4. The imposition of a real estate bonanza was proposed November 21 to raise additional
revenues for the government by increasing the price of petroleum products.
5. Aboard an airplane flying 30,000 feet above the ground was born a plump baby boy this
morning to a 60-year old woman.

1. A homeless man was found dead in a snow-covered parking lot Wednesday morning as the
temperature fell below freezing for the first time this winter, police said.

IV. Assignment
Cut out and paste in a short bond paper one news item for each conventional type of lead and
identify the 5Ws and 1H. One bond paper is allotted for one conventional lead. In total, you will
submit to me 5 bond papers. Put it in your portfolio. Submit it next Thursday.
