Executive summary
During the COVID-19 pandemic, people have reduced the frequency of going out, and need to
engage in health behaviors at home. Health issues has aroused people's attention. This paper aims
to examine the influencing mechanism of health consciousness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A questionnaire method was used to select respondents on an online platform. The questionnaire
includes is there any change in your lifestyle due to the pandemic situation? This study mainly
discussed the influencing mechanism of health consciousness during the pandemic of COVID-
19. Do they vaccinate against COVID-19. Did subtle health issues start to concern you during
the COVID pandemic or maintaining hygiene is a very important precaution against any disease.
The survey was used to examine the relationship between health consciousness among people
before and after the pandemic. The results show that there are significant differences. Health
consciousness has a significant positive effect on home-based exercise. The pandemic made
people deeply feel the fragility of life and the importance of health.

How to turn the consciousness in the brain into action is very important?  In this write-up, we
briefly articulate the current scenario of COVID-19 in Bangladesh and provide some
recommendations on how this pandemic rose health consciousness among people. Perceived
behavioral control acts as the mediator between health consciousness and home-based exercise.
Health consciousness can influence home-based exercise through health life goals and perceived
behavioral control in turn. The findings suggest that people should pay attention to promoting the
transformation of health consciousness. It provides enlightenment for people to adopt health
behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction
The year 2020 has seen the outbreak of COVID-19, a major global health crisis. As of August 3,
2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread to 216 countries, with 17,660,523 confirmed cases
and 680,894 deaths. It is an infectious and respiratory disease that it’s spread through droplets
from sneezes. The major factor about this virus is most people will be affected by it but not
everyone will suffer. The virus affects the human body and gradually makes its immune system
weaker. Mostly the virus affects the lungs and patients face breathing difficulty. . These factors
make the virus different and more deadly than previous ones human beings had ever faced in
history.

The pandemic has caused a strong impact on the global economy and threatened people’s lives
seriously. In this crisis, health has been the top priority. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, health and
wellness have become more important than ever before. Various countries have actively adopted
strict quarantine measures to control the spread of the pandemic.

However, the mandatory prohibition of going out has seriously affected people’s daily life. It
may lead to a decrease in physical activity, an increase in sedentary time, and cause physical and
mental health problems. Many countries are adopting non-therapeutic preventive measures,
which include travel bans, remote office activities, country lockdown, and most importantly,
social distancing.

As like other countries Bangladesh also face many challenges. Bangladesh is a lower-middle-
income economy with one of the world's densest populations. Social distancing is difficult in
many areas of the country, and with the minimal resources the country has, it would be
extremely challenging to implement the mitigation measures. Mobile sanitization facilities and
temporary quarantine sites and healthcare facilities could help mitigate the impact of the
pandemic at a local level.

Health consciousness is the degree to which individuals care about their health. The more health-
conscious people are, the more likely they are to have healthy habits which is the basis for
individuals to take health measures. In recent years, people have focused on the influence of

health consciousness on various health behaviors, mainly in a healthy diet, and health
information, Home-based exercise. The pandemic of COVID-19 made people deeply feel the
fragility of life and the importance of health. How to turn the consciousness in the brain into
action is very important.

We choose this subject to emphasize for the pandemic situation rose consciousness among the
people of Bangladesh. In general, we can see that the people of Bangladesh is not that much
aware of their health. But during this pandemic period we believe that the people slowly started
to realize the importance of healthy and fit lifestyle. In this write-up, we briefly articulate the
current scenario of COVID-19 in Bangladesh and provide some recommendations on how this
pandemic rose health consciousness among people.

Hypothesis

There are so many reasons behind people becomes health conscious it can be both in a good or
bad manner. My hypothesis is that people becomes health conscious to stay fit, healthy and safe
from the covid-19 virus.

Literature-1
COVID-19 and nutrition: How the pandemic induced a much-awaited behavioral change
(George &Parasnis, 2021)
A nutritious & balanced diet is indeed an effective prophylactic measure against COVID-19.
However, a positive behavioral change in our daily diet during the lockdown must be sustained
even after the pandemic in order to ensure its long-term positive impacts.
The pandemic has been a nightmare for people all over the world. Other than all the bad news
followed by the pandemic, there are a hand few of silver linings. For example – according to
researchers, there has been a visible positive behavioral change in the eating habits of people
around the world. The shift is much more visible in the eating habits of urban populations, who
generally tend to eat more processed fast foods & eat out more as compared to the rural people.
 According to research conducted in the United States, 8 out of 10 people in the US
changed their eating habits during to the pandemic.
 A survey conducted on 3533 Italian people focusing on diet, eating habits & lifestyle
indicated an increase in homemade recipes, cereals, legumes and a decrease in fresh fish,
packaged bakery products, and alcoholic intake during the pandemic period.
 Based on a study by the International Food Information Council (IFIC), more than 60%
of Americans reported that they preferred cooking at home more during the pandemic &
around 20% informed that they were eating healthier than usual & also eating more than
usual.
 Other countries such as India has also seen positive impacts on the diet of people during
the pandemic.

There were several impacts on the eating habit of regular people during the pandemic. Some of
the major impacts are explained below-

 Preference for home-cooked food

During the first stage of the lockdown, the restaurants & fast-food chains were closed in most
countries due to health issues. Therefore, by choice or by force, they had to eat home cooked
food. However, throughout the pandemic, this had become a habit for most people. People
started preferring home cooked food over store bought or fast food. Before the pandemic, due to
the lack of time and the convenience factor, eating out or consuming ready-made processed
foods was the norm. The lockdown during the pandemic led to a positive change in the mindset
of people, including the younger demographic. During the lockdown many young people picked
up cooking and baking skills and had started taking charge of their own meals.
Social media was a big influence on the people. People saw many tutorials on YouTube &
Facebook & started to practice baking & cooking which they never had done before the
pandemic situation. The young generation also started sharing the pictures of their home cooked
meals which encouraged others to consumer more home cooked meals.

 Shifting trends towards healthier eating and food safety

Good health & immunity depends much on the food consumed by people & the lifestyle led by
people. During the pandemic, people developed an idea that unbalanced & unhealthy diet &
lifestyle often makes a person prone to viruses. Thus, this idea started causing people to make
healthier food choices. As a result, people started to pay more attention to their eating habits.
People from all around the world started consuming more fruits & vegetables and also started
consuming less of fried foods, sugar and salts.
There has also been a dramatic increase in the consumption of organic produce and natural food
items. While increased consumption of healthy food items is a positive development, steps
should be taken to ensure that these items are accessible and affordable to everyone.

 Increased health Safety measures

During the pandemic, people became very conscious with food safety. They started even
cleaning raw foods with artificial cleansers in order to remove viruses & bacteria. People started
to sanitize every once in a while, & also sanitize or wash their clothing & other belonging
frequently. People also started to eat vitamins & medicines in order to improve immunity. Other

than these, people also decided to live an overall healthy lifestyle in order to keep themselves &
their family safe.

Vida Health is a virtual care platform which helps & motivatespeople to transform their lives
through better health, exercise, diet logs, mood tracking, sleep minutes& the number of sessions
they had with their health instructor in order to see how people were treating their health.

“Vida Health activity data” from more than 10,000 users show that its members are more health-
conscious since the outbreak of COVID-19. The data also shows a significant increase in healthy
activity since the start of the pandemic.
 Despite of gyms being closed; daily exercise minutes have increased 43%
 New routines in COVID-19 have helped people get more sleep each night.Sleep minutes
increased up to 20%
 Diet logs have increased by 49%. This shows that people are more aware of what they’re
eating and are taking the time to log their meals.
 Mental health is critical during these trying times. In this crucial time, most people are
making a conscious effort to stay in tune with their feelings, having increased their mood
tracking more than 186%
 People look forward to their Regular health checkups and therapiesfor more support
during the pandemic.

There are many similar articles in the internet regrading increase in health consciousness during
the pandemic. However, most of these articles put emphasis on the people all around the world.
Whereas, our research will illustrate the scenario in Bangladesh as we’ve collected data only in
Bangladesh. The purpose is to create a comprehensive report on whether people have become
more health conscious during the Covid-19 period.

Methodology

To research the topic, we conducted a survey. We asked various types of questionnaire about the
health issues during this pandemic. This paper aims to examine the influencing mechanism of
health consciousness on home-based exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic. A questionnaire
method was used to select respondents on an online platform. The questionnaire includes is there
any change in your lifestyle due to the pandemic situation? This study mainly discussed the
influencing mechanism of health consciousness during the pandemic of COVID-19 also are they
vaccinate against COVID-19? Also to what extend the pandemic has effect on the mental health?
Did subtle health issues start to concern during the COVID pandemic or do people agree that
maintaining hygiene is a very important precaution against any disease? We also asked people if
they started to take more vitamin and nutrients to improve your immunity system? We collected
in total of 50 responses to conduct a good survey about the topic. At last we also wanted to know
their opinion about rising health consciousness among people in this COVID pandemic.

Interview

We have conducted 10 online interviews and asked 5 questions to each one of them.

1. Have you started to take any safety measures to avoid the risks of
disease in this pandemic period? If yes, what are those measures?

In interviews, everyone claimed that they have been taking several safety measures to keep
themselves and their families safe from the disease in this pandemic period. “Yes, I have started
to take different kinds of safety measures. My whole family has started to be extra careful when
the pandemic started. We started sanitizing ourselves very often and try to maintain a healthy
diet also” said one of our interviewees. Some interviewees said not only sanitization and masks,
they also restrict themself to visit crowded places so that they can maintain social distance
properly. According to another interviewee along with sanitization, mask, and social distancing,

she is also very conscious about hygiene. “I have to bring many daily necessary products and
food items from outside to home and because of that, I use different kinds of antibacterial
products like, disinfectant spray, antibacterial soap, etc. to keep those things as much virus and
bacteria-free as possible.” “As Coronavirus is an infectious and respiratory disease, it is
necessary to make yourself health conscious rather than depending on any kind of medicine,” she
said.
Eventually, all the interviewees agreed at one point that the best possible way to keep themselves
and their families’ safe from this virus is by developing health consciousness.

2. Did your food habit change during this pandemic? If yes, then what sort
of change do you see in your food habit?

Almost every interviewee claims that they have changed their food habits during this pandemic
period, especially in the lockdown period. Though at the beginning of this pandemic no one did
not give any priority to their food habit but later everyone started to realize that developing an
immune system is one of the most important criteria and treatment to survive this pandemic and
to do so consume foods that contain more protein and vitamin rather than regular food is
necessary. Among our 10 interviewees, 8 people actually agree with the fact that they change
their food habits. All of them increased the consumption of healthy foods like; fruits, vegetables,
protein and less sugar, probiotics, etc. “I started taking protein-based foods like eggs, milk. I
started sanitizing my hands, trying to take zinc-based tablets called Zinorat to balance my body
water level and always taking vitamin coated tablets like B complex to give my immune system
better support,” said one of our interviewees. Not only food habits, but 4 of our interviewees also
join the gym to keep themselves fit and healthy. “I started gym at end of the last year as soon as I
realize to develop immune system staying fit and healthy is more than important. I also
maintaining a proper healthy diet,” said one of our interviewees.
But there are some exceptions also, according to 2 of our interviewees they did not change any
food habits during this pandemic period. They are following the same pattern as they always
follow and they are ok with it. “No, my food habit didn’t change during the pandemic. Just
increased the amount of FRESH FRUITS consumption,” said one interviewee. Though the one
thing that is common to all 10 interviewees is they all become a bit skeptical about eating street
food.

3. Have you strictly followed all the lockdown restrictions from the
government? Do you think lockdown is helpful and important for the
benefit of your health?

From all interviews we conducted, we came to know that most of the interviewees haven’t
followed all the lockdown restrictions from the government strictly. In our country, at first, the
lockdown restrictions were very strict and the authority was trying their best to make sure that
everyone followed those instructions but later on the authority became careless and people
started to take the lockdown lightly. According to our interviewees at first, they also tried their
best to maintain the restrictions properly but later it became difficult for them too. But they all
agreed at one point that lockdown played a vital role to reduce the affected rate of Covid-19.
According to them, lockdown forced people to stay at home for a very long time, and because of
that, they were able to lead a healthy lifestyle and concentrate on their physical and mental
health, which was quite difficult for them to maintain in their regular lifestyle. “I tried my best to
maintain the lockdown restriction but couldn’t maintain it for this long time. Lockdown reduced
the affected rate so it is obviously helpful and important to face the pandemic,” said one
interviewee. Another interviewee said “I don’t follow the restrictions very strictly. But I do think
lockdown was helpful and it at least increased the seriousness on the people.”

Though lockdown is beneficial but it cannot be a permanent solution. Nowadays long-term

lockdown has become a nightmare for many people. According to one interviewee, “Lockdown
up to a certain level by a properly organized way is important but if it continues for a very long
time it will obviously lose its effectiveness. It is more important to focus on health safety issues
and disease curing projects than pushing lockdowns.”

4. Have you or any of your family members been affected by Coronavirus
yet? If yes, then how did you manage to overcome this disease and
which element has helped you to recover your health?

Among the 10 interviews, only 3 of them face the disaster of the Covid-19 effect. Two of them,
themselves were affected by the virus and another person’s family members got affected by the
virus. The affected people actually suffer a lot. They faced many kinds of difficulties during their
affected period, even one of them lost her grandmother due to the Coronavirus effect. “I got
affected by Covid-19 on the day of Eid-ul-Adha 2020. This situation got worse when all of my
family members got affected in a few days. It was a disaster for us. After suffering for a few
days, my grandma passed away in a hospital due to Covid-19.” “From that incident, I understand
the importance of a healthy and fit lifestyle,” she said. According to another interviewee, along
with medical treatment, mental support is very necessary to overcome this disease. Not only the
medical treatment and mental support but also maintaining proper hygiene is also very important.
There is no better way than maintaining proper hygiene to stay away from this disease.
According to 1 of the interviewees, if you are fit and healthy you have less probability to get
affected by this virus and even if you got affected you have a high probability to recover quickly.
According to all three of them, the one common thing they learn from their virus-affected
incident is the importance of a healthy and fit lifestyle. They all are now become more health-
conscious than ever before.

5. Do you think ordering food online in this pandemic is safe and healthy
for you? What is your perception about online food service in terms of
safety and hygiene?

According to most of the interviewees at the beginning of the pandemic period ordering food
online is not that safe and healthy but now the perception is a little bit different. Most of them
agreed at one point that because of the health consciousness they are trying to avoid ordering
food from outside as much as possible. As Covid-19 is an infectious disease so it is very risky to
order food online. But now the cafés and restaurants are claiming that they are following hygiene
very carefully and trying their best to ensure food safety. The online food service delivery

companies are also trying their best. “Food can be ordered online now. If it is ensured that the
food is being served in a hygiene way then it’s not a problem. Instead of going to a restaurant or
else, food can be ordered home to avoid crowds and gatherings,” said one of our interviewees. “I
do think ordering food online in this pandemic is safe and healthy. I ordered a lot of time rather
than going to the restaurant by myself. Also, they tried to maintain the safety issue as much as
possible,” said another interviewee.

Data presentation and analysis

Here, we can see that almost 60% which is the majority of the 61 responses strongly agree
and approximately 35% agree that the younger generation is technologically updated
compared to the older generation when technology was not so hyped up.

For the above question, we found that approximately 62% voted for Facebook,
approximately 30% voted for Instagram and approximately 9% voted for TikTok as the
more popular social media platform for the young generation.

We found a combination of answers from our surveyors, with approximately 30% saying
that they use technology-based platforms for more than 6 hours,23% saying that they use it
almost the entire day, approximately 28% saying that they use it between 2-4 hours leaving
the approximately 20% using it between 4-6 hours.

Here, approximately 56% which is the majority of the responses are neutral about the
above statement,20% claimed that they agree with approximately 15% saying that they
disagree with the statement. This shows that the majority of the people do not fully agree
nor disagree that Bangladeshi youngsters are on the right path by using technology versus
the ones who don’t.

Keeping the pandemic situation in mind, approximately 58% and approximately 36%
strongly agreed and agreed with the states respectively. This sums up to a total of 94%
claiming that technology played a huge role in online education.

For the statement above, we found that approximately 36% and 41% claim that they
strongly agree and agree with the statement respectively. This sums up to a total of 77%
out of 100% of the 61 responses who think that the younger generation tends to spend
more time misusing technology rather than utilizing it. And the minority group of
23%(15% and 8%) are neutral and disagree with the statement respectively.

As per the age of the 61 respondents who are all students, approximately 33% and 41%
strongly agreed and agreed to the states respectively. This sums up a total of 74% who
think that students are plagiarizing for their assessments resulting in academic
dishonesty. We can also see a minority
group of 18% who are neutral with the statement.

Here, we see a combination of opinions with approximately 36% and approx. 20% saying
that they agree and strongly agree with the above statement respectively. This sums up a
total of 56% which is slightly more than half who are in favor of this and we can also see
that approximately 25% and approximately 17% respectively(42% in total) are neutral
and disagree with the statement which is like a little less than a half who are against the
statement. So, there is a roughly 50/50 ratio of people who think that the young
generations’ exposure to technological devices and therefore technology should be limited.

For this particular statement, approximately 64% and approximately 31% strongly agreed
and agreed respectively which sums up a total of 95% who think that it depends on the
user’s intentions on how they explore the wide world of technology leaving a minority of
5% who are neutral on this statement.

Here, we found a combination of answers with approximately 36% agreeing,
approximately 20% strongly agreeing and others either disagreeing or neutral with the
statement. This brings out approximately 57%(36% and 21%) who are in support of this
statement. Hence, there is a 50/50 ratio of people who think that technological distraction is
hindering younger generations’ creativity and talents.

Conclusion
It's no wonder that technology has become an essential part of our daily lives. It is rare to
see youngsters without a digital device in their hands, particularly nowadays. The negative
effects of technology were also reported in the press, as bad news spread fast. Parents may
play an important role in educating their youngsters on how to use technology properly.
They are the most powerful motivator in a youngster's life. They will make them aware of
the negative aspects of technology. Nonetheless, the rapidity at which young people
incorporate technology into their everyday lives raises the question of its effect on their
growth. Any modern technology comes with both positive and negative consequences, but
as a society, it is up to us to determine if the good ones outweigh the negative ones. That
leaves many of us wondering: is technology all bad?

Recommendation
Our survey was done using a small sample due to time constraints. Therefore, the data
analysis only gives partial information about the research being done. However, even
though this data analysis some recommendations can be made regarding the subject of my
research.
 Social media ought to be utilized for positive purposes.
 The utilization of social media in enlightening ways improves the abilities and
capacities.
 To play down its negative impact’s government has got to take a few strict steps.
Government should ban immoral websites.
 A Solid suggestion for the government is to form a policy or community that checks
which shameless websites are utilized by which clients.
 Government must make arrangements to check out unfair reporting of media which
affects society.
 A solid proposal for the clients of social media is that they have to keep in mind the
reason for utilizing social media.
 Children ought to utilize their time admirably rather than squandering their
valuable time on social systems like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
 To secure the long-standing time of children, instructors and guardians ought to
check out what they are doing on social media.

Proper communication and guidelines between parents and children can lead to a happy
solution. Our reliance on technology should be curbed, not the technology itself. We have to
control ourselves and limit the utilization of contraptions and technology.
