Introduction
Background of the study
The Philippine Statistics Authority ( PSA ) signifies the headline inflation in the Philippines
continued its uptrend as it moved up further to 7.7 percent in October 2022, from 6.9 percent in
September 2022. This is the highest recorded inflation since December 2008. With this month’s
inflation, the Philippines’ average inflation rate from January to October 2022 stood at 5.4
percent. In October 2021, the inflation rate was observed at 4.0 percent. Specifically, latest BSP
estimates show that inflation will average 5.4% this year 2022-2023, higher than the previous
estimate of 5.0% announced last June 23.
Inflation is the rate of increase in prices over a given period of time. Inflation is typically a
broad measure, such as the overall increase in prices or the increase in the cost of living in a
country. But it can also be more narrowly calculated—for example, for certain goods, such as
food, or for services, such as school tuition. Whatever the context, inflation represents how
much more expensive the relevant set of goods and/or services has become over a certain
period, most commonly a year. ( C. Öner, 2022 )
Inflation is defined as a general and ongoing rise in the level of prices throughout an
economy. Inflation is the most important indicator of the economy, and the exchange rate
always tries to be lower and stay stable. If the levels are going high and become unstable, that
will reflect a general and continuous increase in the prices of goods and services, weakening
purchasing power of the population and thereby reducing national income. As a result, the
inflation rate must be under control, and the recent growth curve is visible. ( N. Yanescha, 2022 )
The cost of living in the Philippines is really cheap compared to other neighboring countries.
But despite that, a lot of Filipinos are still struggling to put meals three times a day on their

table. With the continuous rise of inflation in the country, the poorest of the poor in the country
might be the ones who will be directly and most affected by the rise of prices of basic
commodities such as but not limited to food and water, housing, healthcare, education, gas,
utilities, transportation, and other daily expenses. ( Bria Homes, 2022 )
Demand-pull inflation occurs when an increase in the supply of money and credit
stimulates the overall demand for goods and services to increase more rapidly than the
economy's production capacity. This increases demand and leads to price rises. When people
have more money, it leads to positive consumer sentiment. This, in turn, leads to higher
spending, which pulls prices higher. It creates a demand-supply gap with higher demand and
less flexible supply, which results in higher prices. ( J. Fernando, 2022 )
Inflation affects students' life about their living, their study, and their spirit. Student's living
becomes difficult because of the rapidly rising price (S. Lakshmi, 2018). High inflation raises the
costs of students’ necessities, such as housing, food, and transportation, and will push up tuition
costs, making it more important for students to spend less and earn more where possible ( S.
Bushra, 2022 ). Some students are cutting back on basic necessities to cope with the rising prices
of food, dormitory rent and tuition. Some are also looking to take part-time jobs to help with
expenses. ( W. Deguzman, 2022 )
This study includes the typical challenges and issues that the Filpinos' necessities in living
are affected by due to rising costs. The main cost of inflation is the erosion of real income, which
occurs when prices rise unevenly and causes some customers' purchasing power to decline. For
both those who receive and pay fixed interest rates, inflation might over time affect their ability
to make purchases.
This subject was chosen by the researchers to explore how inflation affects the cost of
living. Additionally to provide more information on the causes of rising product pricing.
Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the impact of inflation rate on the lifestyle necessities of Grade
12 ABM students from Philippine Christian University. It is aimed to collect data, answer
questions, and achieve the objectives, on how much the inflation rate affect the students.
This study aim to answer this specific questions:
1. What are the factors that affect the lifestyle necessities of Grade 12 ABM students in terms
of:
a. Food
b. Bills
c. House rent
d. Health care
e. Clothing
f. Allowance
g. Daily expenses
2. How does the inflation rate affect the lifestyle necessities of Grade 12 ABM Students?
3. What are the possible ways to atleast reduce the expenses of Grade 12 ABM students?
The purpose of this study is to achieve the following:
* To determine how the students adjust on their expenses due to inflation.
* To collect data from the students on how the inflation rate affect their expenses.
* To identify how the lifestyle of the students change due to inflation.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the determination of the impacts of the inflation rate on the lifestyle
necessities of students. Necessities refer to our basic needs to live. The primary goal of this
study is to identify how the inflation rate affects basic needs and to determine any potential
factors affecting the inflation rate for the student’s basic commodities. The primary subjects of
this research study will consist of Grade 12 ABM students enrolled in the academic year 2022-
2023.

The respondents will be limited to ten (10) students in selected sections who are in the
twelfth grade and in the ABM strand at Philippine Christian University-Dasmarinas only.
Students with different strands who are not enrolled in the said university will be excluded as
respondents.

Furthermore, the study will be limited to Philippine Christian University-Dasmarinas only;

other universities in Dasmarinas are not included in the study. Moreover, the study will cover
the months of November and December 2022 only, and data that will be gathered next year or
in preceding months will not be included in the data analysis.
Significance of the study
The study was conducted to determine how the inflation rate affects people's expenses. The
result of this study will help us how important it is to understand the inflation rate.
Consumers
- It will assist them in budgeting their money and selecting good products.
Future researchers
- It will help the future researchers by giving strong statements that will help in the resolution of
this kind of topic
