Invisibility Essay

"Crash" you've just broken into the natural art museum and you are holding a rare African

sculpture worth millions. Immediately, the alarms are blaring, all exits have been sealed, and you

are surrounded by dozens of armed guards. What would you do? Attempt flying away and get

shot in the process, or turn invisible and make a hasty, undetectable escape. Although some may

choose flight, they are wrong and can get shot dead within seconds. Invisibility is the way to go

because it has many more uses, flying is rudimentary, while invisibility is just plain cooler, and

invisibility allows us to see the world for what it truly is.

Invisibility has many uses, it can be used for saving people, fun, and even stealing. According to

the podcast, Katie McVay says that, “Susan Storm from the Fantastic Four used her invisibility

for the good of the world. Harry Potter used his invisibility cloak to sneak into Hogsmeade for a

fun day.” Invisibility is full of opportunities for personal gain. You know that one thing you

really want but can't buy? Invisibility is any thief's dream. You could manage to take any car

you want, and they would never be able to track down who took it, because for all any camera

can see, the car drove off by itself. You could go into a store near closing time and cloak

yourself, then when nobody is in, have a little shopping spree. You might say these are unethical,

but think about it: why do you spend the time saving up paper when the object you desire is right
there, not restrained by anything accept your own will? The only reason you don't take it is

because you fear the repercussions. If you are caught, you'll be caught and sent to jail. But now

you are not restricted by anything. You can't be caught. There is no downside. The world is

yours. You can sneak into movies. You could blackmail corporations. If you wanted to go on

that trip to Madrid you could stow away on an airplane, maybe even sit in first class.

Once you're on, nobody care's how you got there. In the podcast, Katie again points out “that

many animals can camouflage themselves into their surroundings, making them seem invisible.”

Imagine if humans could do that. You could live the dream every human desire: a world without

responsibility. The only reason you look down on it now is because you've been taught it is

unattainable, and that the consequences outweigh the possibilities. But now the consequences are

gone, and the possibilities are endless. You know in your heart that you would jump on that

opportunity, even if you would not admit it freely. So, my main point is that with flight, the

world is yours to travel, but with invisibility, the world is yours to take.

Flying is flashy and rudimentary, while invisibility is just plain cooler. Scientists are working on

ways to make objects render as invisible. According to Source 4, the podcast, “Scientists are

working on a new material called ‘metamaterials’, they wrap around unmoving objects and

redirect the light around them, so that you can’t see them. The way you see objects is by light

hitting the object then reflecting off the object and into your eyes. Scientists are now trying to

bend that light so that it goes around that object, then enters your eyes. So, it makes it seem

invisible. Katie says that invisibility is cool because it is challenging our minds. It challenges us

to think about something new and discover more incredible things that weren’t thought to be
possible before. Flight is so basic, we discovered it decades ago, we need something new and

interesting.

Invisibility is very powerful because it allows to see the world for what it truly is. People may

say that those who select invisibility are sneaks and criminals, they are the creepy kind. For

example, Source 2 says, “Those who select invisibility, they assert, are sneaks and criminals.”

They go one to say that flight “typifies confidence and the ability to lead”. But this is simply not

true at all. Invisibility is a superpower for the calm and collected people who choose flight are

show-offs. With invisibility we can see people as they truly are. William Hobbs in the article,

says that people who choose invisibility carry sort of a “quiet confidence”. This is very true,

though some may use it for bad things, the big picture is that with invisibility people are able to

observe the world, people who choose invisibility have the kindest hearts and are more

empathetic. People who are choosing flying, they might have an inflated ego, maybe they are

power hungry. When you’re flying it's like saying “Hey look at me, look at me!” They want to

be the center of attention. An invisible person won't be seen and marked with a label by society.

You can easily see a person fly, but you can't see an invisible person. Once exposed that you

have the ability of flight, you will be disowned, hazed, and feared by former loved ones and

society. Invisibility is the most secure superpower.

Choosing between the power of flight and invisibility, the power of invisibility without a doubt is

the better superpower. This is because it's much more useful, its cooler than flying because flying

is so basic, and invisibility allows us to see the world for what it truly is. Invisibility is absolutely

the greater superpower. Because of evident advantages such as practicality, safety, and security,
invisibility has an edge over flight in many situations. Make the right choice, be safe, be

practical, be secure, be invisible.
