Lesson Exemplar in Mathematics 6

Expected Ways of Solving the problem involving Direct

Proportion

a. Getting the product of means and extremes

MEANS

80 pcs : 30 min = ______ pcs : 60 min

Bibingka : minutes = bibingka : minutes

EXTREMES

Let A = 80 pcs of bibingka; B = 30 minutes; C = N pcs of

bibingka; and D = 60 minutes

Solution:
A : B = C: D
AxD=BxC
80 pcs x 60 min = N x 30 min
4 800 pcs/min ÷ 30 min = N
160 pcs of bibingka = N

1) Letters B and C represent as Mean Numbers, A and D

are Extreme Numbers.
2) To find the missing term in a proportion, multiply the
complete data whether in the means or in the extremes,
then divide the remaining data whether in the means or in
the extremes.
3) Extremes have complete data, therefore, multiply 80 pcs
of bibingka by 60 minutes.
4) Then, divide the product to the remaining data in the
means.
5) The answer is the missing term in a proportion involving
direct proportion.

b. Fractional Form (Cross-multiplication)

A = C 80 pcs = N pcs
B D 30 min 60 min

(80 pcs x 60 min = 4 800 pcs/min ÷ 30 min = 160 pcs of

bibingka)

vendor at Bacolod City Public Plaza during night time. He
can sell 25 pieces of balut for every hour, how many hours
can he sell for 75 pieces of balut?

2) Mother owns a flower shop near the Bacolod Public Plaza.

Most of the time, there were many orders of bouquets she
received during Valentine’s Day. Every 5 bouquets of flowers
cost ₱1,000, so how much will you pay if you order 20
bouquets of flowers?

5. Generalization

How do you solve problems involving direct proportion?

What should you remember when setting a direct proportion?

Direct Proportion – when one term increases, the other term also
increases at the same rate or the other way.

Day 2 – INVERSE PROPORTION

A. Preliminary Activities

B. Developmental Activities

1) Presentation

Mang Pedro has a small stool of selling bibingka in front of San

Sebastian Cathedral. When six of them prepared and cooked bibingka, they
can finished 60 pieces in an hour, how many pieces of bibingka can they
make when only two persons prepared and cooked at the same rate?

Ask: How will you solve this problem?

2) Performing the Activity

- Let the children form into 5 groups

- Each group will find solutions to solve the problem.
- Each group performs different ways to solve the problem.

3) Processing the Activity

Ask the pupils to report and discuss their solution in finding the answer.

a. Getting the means and extremes.

Let A = 6 persons; B = 2 persons ; C = 60 bibingka and D = N bibingka

Solution:

A:B=C:D
BxC=AxD

2 persons x 60 bibingka = 6 persons x N bibingka

120 bibingka/person ÷ 6 persons = N
160 of bibingka = N
Lesson Exemplar in Mathematics 6

6 persons : 2 persons = 60 pieces of bibingka : ___ pieces of bibingka

2 x 60 = 120 ÷ 6 = 20 pieces of bibingka

1) Letters B and C represent as Mean Numbers, A and D

are Extreme Numbers.
2)To find the missing term in a proportion, multiply the
complete data whether in the means or in the extremes,
then divide the remaining data whether in the means or in
the extremes.
2) Extremes have complete data, therefore, multiply 60
bibingka by 2 persons.
3) Then, divide the product to the remaining data in the
means.
4) The answer is the missing term in a proportion involving
direct proportion.

4. Reinforcing the Concept and Skill

B. Developmental Activities

1) Presentation

Present this problem.

Mang Pedro has a small stool of selling bibingka in front of San

Sebastian Cathedral. He cooked 150 pieces of bibingka and wanted to give
it for his 3 children Nonoy, Inday and Totoy with a ratio of 1:2:3. How many
pieces of bibingka will each of his children receive?

Asked: Do you also like bibingka?

Who among Mang Pedro’ children will get the greatest
number of bibingka?

2) Performing the Activity

- Let the children form into 5 groups

- Each group will find solutions to solve the problem.
- Each group performs different ways to solve the problem.

3) Processing the Activity

Ask the pupils to report and discuss their solution in finding the answer.

Step 1: 1n + 2n + 3n = 150
6n = 150
n = 150 ÷ 6
n = 25

Step 2: (1 x 25) + (2 x 25) + (3 x 25) = 150

25 + 50 + 75 = 150
150 = 150
