TABLE OF CONTENTS
The situation that we chose in our topic is the problem in the improper waste disposal. Based
on our interview/survey, most of the residents in Barangay Catacdegan of Manabo incinerate,
this way of disposal is not eco-friendly and can affect the barangay itself and the people can
inhale the emission of smoke. It can also lead to a number of diseases especially respiratory
diseases, such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema. Burning trash can be also dangerous if
not been supervised; fire can spread and burn nearby trees, wood houses and can harm
animals. Improper waste disposal contributes so much in worldwide known global warming
as burning waste leads to air pollution since greenhouse gasses has been released. This
situation currently evident in the whole world, these problems should be managed because
these cause global warming and climate change that can harm the people of future generation.
Waste can be solid, liquid, or gaseous, with various disposal and management strategies for
each. Industrial, biological, residential, municipal, organic, biomedical, and radioactive
wastes are all dealt with via waste management. Waste can constitute a concern to human
health in some cases. Health issues are present throughout the waste management process.
Health problems can occur in a variety of ways, both indirectly and directly. Directly,
through solid waste management, and indirectly, through water consumption, soil and food.
Waste is produced by human activity, for example, the extraction and processing of raw
materials. Waste management is intended to reduce adverse effects of waste on human health,
the environment, planetary resources and aesthetics.
The related issued on the project is the worldwide problem in the pollution on air and land. In
where in the problems in air pollution are burning of trashes that can results in releasing too
much greenhouse gases in the air that can easily destroy the layers of the atmosphere, second
is the problem in land pollution if we don’t have a healthy soil that can be used for planting
plants or trees due to the chemicals that already killed the fertility of the soil due to the
harmful chemicals that comes from the garbage’s the world will suffer from lacking of filter
soil. With these two related issues that might happen in the community of barangay
Catacdegan, Manabo the people in the community will suffer in term of their primary source
of their income which is framing. If the atmosphere is damaged, the growing plants of
farmers will easily die because of too much concentration of heat. The lack of live soil or
fertile soil, the farmers in the community will have problems to grow their plants because
there are no more soils to be plant on due to harmful chemicals that killed soil.
One of the current issues of the residents in the Barangay. Is that they don’t have their own
community public waste bin or dumping areas where they can put their waste in proper areas
that can’t affects the health of the residents. Proper segregation will be helpful in order to
them to lessen the community problems.
Residents of Catacdegan have their own methods in disposing their waste such us Burning at
their backyard or anywhere where they collected garbage at times. Also, they throwing it on
Riversides or on the river that can affect the health of fishes that one of the resources for the
residents for living and because of that dark flowing waters, floating waste are seen on the
river. And sometimes they just putting their waste somewhere open spaces that causing bad
odors and inhabited by insects.
The main factors that causes the problem is that the residents of Catacdegan is lack of
knowledge on how to properly dispose their waste and if they also have their own discipline
on their selves segregating or recycling their waste. And lack of areas or bin to put their waste
properly.
The general objective of our study is simple, it is for the Barangay to know how to properly
dispose their garbage, to find alternative ways in eliminating their garbage and to ensure that
the community will maintain the cleanliness in Barangay Catacdegan ofManabo. This study
mainly focuses on how the practices of the people in the community can deeply affect, not
just our nature but also their health. With our proposed project which the compost pit with
shredder, this will help reduce the carbon footprint and smoke pollution present in the
Barangay. This is to guarantee that the community will bring an end to incinerating their
garbage.
The project’s specific objectives are to improve the barangay’s cleanliness and orderliness to
raise ecological awareness among residents to provide a compost pit to solve the problem of
uncollected waste, to improve proper waste disposal and segregation as a key to preventing
the problem of where to put their waste, to promote cooperation among residents of Barangay
Catacdegan of Manabo for community development and improvement, and to train
communities about proper trash segregation and removal, as well as soil enrichment, which
will aid their major source of income, which is farming or agriculture.
II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The objective of the study is to let the residents of Barangay Catacdegan, Manabo
know how to properly dispose their garbage. Some factors affect the residents’ way on
garbage disposal, these factors are lack of knowledge on proper waste disposal, lack of
garbage trucks that may collect their garbage and the residents were accustomed on
incinerating their own garbage.
2. What are the methods used by the residents in disposing their waste?
Asthma – a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing
difficulty in breathing. It usually results from allergic reaction or other forms
hypersensitivity.
Bronchitis – inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bronchial tubes. It typically causes
bronchospasm and coughing.
Emphysema – a condition in which the air sacs of the lungs are damaged and enlarged,
causing breathlessness.
Greenhouse Gasses –a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effects by absorbing infrared
radiation, carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons
On the __ day of February 2022, the researchers went to Barangay Catacdegan which is
located in ManaboAbra. Students are about to choose 30 Respondents and ask permissions
every resident that is leaving there. First, the students started to tell them the purpose for
conducting the interview. The survey questionnaires include their names, occupation,
educational attainment, including their age, marital status, and gender. It is followed by
questions about Barangay Catacdegan’s residents about proper waste segregation and
improper disposal. After answering the survey forms, students asked them if it’s okay to take
pictures with them because it is needed in the documentation. Students ended the interview
with the words of thanks giving for the opportunity to conduct a survey to them. The
answering of survey questionnaire per houses lasted for about 5-15 minutes.

VI. Summary of Findings
The research questions and codes provided by the researchers proves that there are
evident problems in Barangay Catacdegan of Manabo. All 30 respondents, were residents of
Catacdegan. Who provided qualitative information about the different waste disposal that
leads to improper waste management in the barangay and their willingness and commitment
to minimize the waste and to implement proper waste disposal at their community?
Based on the data gathered by the researchers, most of the residents in Barangay
Catacdegan were unable to perform proper waste disposal which can be both unhealthy and
unsafe. The residents of the barangay also lack knowledge on proper waste disposal. The
dilemma could be solved if the residents will be given proper and sufficient knowledge and
proper disposal.
VII. Conclusion
1. The methods used by the residents in disposing their wastes are incinerating their
garbage, segregating it by its category, throwing it to a well, or they practice
simple composting. This is happening because of there was no one will collect all
their garbage’s or no collection of garbage.
2. The improper waste management of the barangay is the main factor that cause the
problem. If the people living in the area knows how to maintain their
surroundings, to dispose their garbage knowingly and properly make use of these
wastes, then the problem may be lessened. If their heads provide and make space
or specific place for their community to dispose waste or the residents themselves
make a proper space to do proper waste disposal then it will be a great way to
prevent improper waste management.
3. The residents of the barangay are willing to learn and to do proper disposal and
segregations of garbage in order for them to reduce the appearance of Insects,
cockroaches. And for their river to be clean and to remove the bad odors of their
surroundings.
