Research Gap

Deixis is an important field studied in pragmatics and one of the writing components that has
to be noticed by the students to communicate the meaning in writing. Deixis is a word
that functions to refer and to point word contextually in order to have meaning. There are five
types of deixis; those are person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis and
discourse deixis.

Mirta Tri (2018) In order to make a good recount text, the deixis is very important to use in
the text as a reference word to make the writing more understandable. Levinson
states that deixis concerns the way in which languages encode orgrammaticalize features
of the context of utterance or speech event. This is also concerns ways in which in the
interpretation of utterances depends on the analysis of that context of utterance.

Dian Kusumawati (2018) Deixis is a technical term (from Greek) for one of the most
basic things we do with utterances.

Irnawati (2020) According to Yule deixis is derived from the Greek “deicticos” means “to
show” or “to indicate” it means pointing via language. Deictic terms are used to refer to
ourselves to others and object in our environment. Deictic expressions are also
sometimes called “indexicals‟.

Solikah (2019) Deixis refers to the phenomenon wherein understanding the meaning
of certain words and phrases in an utterance requires contextual information.
Words or phrases that require contextual information to convey meaning are
deictic.

1. Explain the result found in each paper :
- Mirta (2018) found that there are 5 type of deixis that is 111 person deixis
(55,5%), 15 temporal deixis (7,5%) , 20 spatial deixis (10%), 54 discourse deixis
(27 %), 0 social deixis (0%). Based on the table above it showed the mostly
deixis used by the students is person deixis. They used person deixis as pronoun
to conveying their meaning to indicate people. Person deixis almost found in
every sentence by the writer. It involved the use of three types of person
deixis that was first person deixis, second person deixis, and third person deixis.
- Irnawati (2020) found that there are three types of deixis that found in
conversation texts in Smart English Book for Senior High School Grade XI
Semester 1. They are person deixis such as you, I, we, me, my, your, it, his, our,
they, spatial deixis such as that, there, here, and temporal deixis such as later,
then, now, everyday. The most dominant deixis that used in conversation
texts is person deixis that indicate participants as much as 133 times. Person
deixis appears in the conversation texts such as you, I, we, me, my, your, it,
his, our, they. It is followed by spatial deixis which indicate location. The
last dominant deixis is temporal deixis that indicate time.
- Dian (2018) found 5 kinds of deixis in the first grader English teacher’s talk 93
(65.96%) person deixis (I, my, me, we, our, you, your, yourself, he, she, it, her
and him), 17 (12.06%) spatial deixis or place deixis (here, this, there, that), 6
(4.25%) temporal deixis or time deixis (now and yesterday), 16 (11.35%)
discourse deixis (this, that, next, last) and 9 (6.38%) social deixis (Miss).The most
dominant deixis used in the first grader English teacher’s talk of SMK Bandar
Sungai Buaya Malaysia is second person deixis “you” which the percentages
is 73.08%.
- Solikah (2019) found that there are five types of deixis found in the movie
script. They are person deixis, time deixis, place deixis, discourse deixis and
social deixis. Also the type of deixis that used is person deixis.

2. What have not discusse in the paper :

On the previous research they did not discussed about the function of each deixis.

3. Explain what problem that is not solved in previous paper :

All of the problem of the study in previous research has been answered.
