TASK #1

TIMELIN E
Create a timeline of the evolution of Philippine literature from
the Pre-colonial period to the postwar era. The goal is to create
a timeline showing how literature styles changed through each
period.

01 Pre-Colonial Period
Our ancestors had their own literature before the
Spaniards came to the Philippines. Datu, Maginoo,
Maharlika, Timawa, and Alipin were strict social classes
in the society. The Baybayin writing system was the
oldest at the time. The works of literature were oral
literature, which was passed down through word of
mouth.Pre Spanish literature characterized by Legends,
Folk Tales, Myths, and Folk Song.

02 Spanish Period
For over 300 years, Spain colonized the Philippines. It had a significant impact
on the lives and lifestyles of Filipinos. They introduced us about the naming
system, baptism, church, religions such as Catholicism, and recreational
activities such as cockfighting, horse races, and theater. During this time,
Alibata was the first Filipino writing system. The basis of religious practices
was Christian doctrine (Doctrina Cristiana). It was also the first Tagalog and
Spanish book published in the Philippines in 1593 in xylography, while the
Libro de los Cuatro Post Primeras de Hombre was the first book published in
typography. Ang Barlaan at Josephat was the first biblical story published in
the Philippines.

03 American Period
They provided us with free public education throughout this time. They
employed English as the medium of teaching in public schools at all
levels. At the time, Filipino writers copied English and American
models in all forms of literature, including news, reporting, poetry,
stories, plays, essays, and novels. There are three periods that emerged
during American history. The first is the Reorientation period, during
which the English language became the language of literature and was
also used as a method of instruction. The second period is the Imitation
Period, during which various universities printed the literary
masterpieces of the first Filipino authors in English. The the last one is
the Discovery and Growth period. At this point, Filipino writers had
mastered the art of writing literary works in English.

04Japanese Period
The Japanese forbade the use of the English language in almost
all newspapers, with the exception of the Tribune, Philippine
Review, Pillars, Free Philippines, and Filipina. They required us
to use our native language, Tagalog. They also encouraged
Tagalog writing. Filipino writers who were free to write were
those who lived in the United States. Most writers and authors
were forced to go underground or write in Tagalog. The writers
in English shifted to writing in Filipino. During this time,
Filipino literature was given a rest. Many Filipino writers
created plays, poems, short stories, and other works that often
faced with provincial life.

05 Post War-Contemporary Period

It also know as the Recovering Era. It is a period
when the Philippines gained Independence in
America and Japan. Many of the writers
published novels and eventually most the writers
became teacher.
