Example Hydraulic Crane Analysis

What is the maximum load that can be lifted

for a given jib angle to the horizontal?

Hydraulic Crane Analysis

Find the maximum load that can be lifted by a
mobile crane, with a hydraulic cylinder thrust of
19,635 N when the jib is angled at 45o to the
horizontal. Given:

The overall length of the crane jib is 3 m and the

length from the hydraulic cylinder to the jib tip
is 2m.

The angle between the hydraulic cylinder and

the jib is 30o.

Hydraulic Crane Analysis

F2*L1 = F1*(L1-L2)
F2 = 9817.5*1/3 = 3272.5 N
L2 = 2m
Sin 30 = F1/F
F1 = F sin 30 = 19635*0.5
F1 = 9817.5N
Sin 45 = F2/Load
Load = F2/sin45 = 3272.5/0.707
Load = 4628.7 N
L1= 3m
F = 19635 N

Compressive and Tensile Forces

For a compressive load FC

And for a tensile load Ft (i.e. the rod pulling on the

load)

Cylinder Selection Design Options

 Large diameter cylinder means that the system operates at
lower pressure but requires a bigger pump for a given cylinder
rod speed

 Small diameter cylinder means that the system operates at

higher pressure but smaller pump for a given rod speed

 Once cylinder is chosen and max cylinder rod speed required is

known, then find pressure and hence select a suitable pump to
provide the flow rate required (or vice-versa).

 Pump flow rate needed for selected pressure is calculated from

Flow rate = (cylinder area)x(stroke)/time

 Then select pump to provide require pressure and flow duty
