TITLE: 15DAYS ACHIEVEMENT REPORT

THRUSTER BRAKE

Thruster brake is an electro hydraulic device to retard the speed and to hold the moving
machinery when it is stationary such as the gantry operation of the STS on the rail and so on.

The Thruster brake works on the principle of hydraulics, on the supply of electrical power,
motor driven centrifugal impeller draws the oil from the low pressure to the high pressure
upper end. The piston mounted on the same shaft moves to the upper end with full thrust, till
its movement is stopped by the stopper shoulder at the end of the stroke. Pressure build up
stops when the power is discontinued. Radial blade design of the impellers enables it to rotate
both clockwise and anticlockwise direction.

Below is the Thruster Brake Rating

Motor Supply Voltage 230/400V + or -10%

Motor Power 165W
Motor Frequency 50Hz
Force 220N
Stroke 50mm
Braking Torque 135-280Nm
Friction Coefficient 0.4
Temperature -24C to +50C

NOTE: The Thruster brake can be manually released when needed.

The safety measure on the Thruster brake is the proximity sensors the indicate the position of
the stroke.

LEARNING

The Maintenance Manager Mr Narendra laid emphasis on the fact that we should be specific
about studying and understanding the principle of operation of a particular component or
system on the crane and how it synchronises with the other crane operation parts or systems.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Workshop Manager Mr Goodluck has emphasised the need of technical team members to
possess proper public speaking ability to aid in the right dissemination of information within
the team as well as to other Lekki Freeport Terminal Staff and wherever we find ourselves.

REPORT WRITING

Workshop Manager Mr Festus talks about the need for proper report writing by adding good
picture close to the scene or object that can relate with the information we are passing across
which is an part of technical report writing.

SAFETY TOOL BOX TALK

In one of our safety tool box talk, the safety officer discussed about Visual Inspection. He
said before any work is carried out or in any environment, the first thing first is to carryout
visual inspection to know the rules and regulation guiding the environment. Secondly
carryout safety analysis to identify the hazards and risks in the environment or Job Safety
Analysis in the Workplace so one can avoid any accident. Also during operation of
equipment visual inspection is required for safe operation of the equipment

ACHIEVEMENTS

1. Present on the ground to monitor the manual release of the Gantry Motor brake
during the RTG 4hours Endurance test.
2. Present in the Electrical Room to monitor CMS during the 4hours Endurance Test.
3. Knowledge on the Thruster brake disc Alignment, Adjustment and Maintenance.

PENDING TASKS

 Still studying the principle of operation of wheel turning operation control circuit.
 More information on Gantry Cable Rail synchronisation with the Gantry operation.
 More information and understanding on the Spreader Cable Rail synchronisation with
the hoisting operation.

AREAS TO IMPROVE

Based on my personal assessment and feedbacks received from my colleagues and managers,
the areas I believe needs improvement includes;

 Better relationship with the ZPMC and third party contractor to get the required
information needed.
 Better organization of work and work documents.
